Not passing gas! Help!

Recommended Posts

I know this question has probably been asked and answered before, but I’m two days post op and not passing gas. I am burping every time I drink something, but nothing is coming out the other way!! Any tricks?

Walk, walk again, then walk some more.

Did you try the gas x? It helped me. But it takes a few days for it all to expell. I had the same problem.

I was bloated and cramping. Gas X strips did nothing. Ended up taking milk of magnesia twice a day (children's dose) for two days. It worked! I was moving gas and solids and it alleviated my belly.

Lets not forget the gasses they pump into your stomach cavity isn't all inside your stomach or intestines itself. So, you have gasses inside you that don't have a natural way out. So you have to force the gas out. I found that taking a nice deep breath in, holding it while pressing into it slightly, holding that for as long as you can (not too hard, you are just trying to force the gasses to permeate not rip open still healing wounds) then exhale. Worked quite well at reducing the gas pains and bloating.

It seems to affect everyone a little different. Some people wake up with gas pain, for me it took 24 hours. Then it hit me like a freight train. I would just walk, walk, walk and if it starts to cause you pain, lay on your left side, expel the gas, and repeat till it stops. For me, it was 3 to 4 day, with each day better than the previous.

Maybe it's all working itself out and you won't have pain. That's a blessing!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
