Hello,

I have my two-week post-op appointment with my doctor today. Everything has been going well, so he suggested I move on to the pureed stage with a scrambled egg tonight. I was so excited!

I whipped up an egg with plenty of chicken Bone Broth, cooked it, and pureed it to the appropriate consistency. It was very moist - in fact, it really couldn't be chewed, it was very liquified.

So I measured 1/4 cup and started to eat my egg very slowly with an extremely small spoon given to me by my bariatric nutritionist. I took my time - putting my spoon down often and taking 30 minutes to eat. My doctor told me to eat until I felt full - but I really didn't feel full.

But...I have food stuck in my throat now. It's been stuck for a few hours, and it's freaking me out. I really didn't feel full while I was eating.

Has anyone else experienced this - and does it go away?

Thank you...

I get that sensation when I've eaten too much. It usually passes within a half hour. I think the food can't slide into my stomach and is being held in my lower esophagus. Yuck.

Yep, food expands sometimes when it's in your stomach. Occasionally you have to lie down for 15 minutes, or spit it out!!! I have had to spit stuff back up a few times so far. All learning how to manage the sleeved life.

That may be your too full sensation in which you will want to rat until right before that point

Did it the feeling ever pass ?

No, it hasn't passed yet. It's been a few hours. I'm trying some hot tea now to see if it will help. I would spit it up if I could. Perhaps my stress level isn't helping it to go down.

When that happened to me a couple times...I found that breathing deeply and walking really helped. The deep breathing causes the diaphragm to push down on stomach and stimulate peristalsis. Walking just helps jiggle things loose and gravity helps.

Breath deep and walk. It will help.

Drinking liquids might make it worse. Did for me when food was stuck for a bit in the beginning.

Ouchie! Sorry you've experienced that despite doing everything right! My RD suggested starting with only 1/8cup and only eating a tbsp out of it at first. Then going back to finish the 1/8c if it turned out that it set well? We're to start with only 1oz on our program = 2tbsp by volume. ((hugs))

Thanks to everyone who responded to my message.

I haven't had any relief...it's been 28 hours since this started. I can swallow just fine - I've gone back to drinking Protein Shakes, I don't want to try regular food until this clears up. However, I still feel like something is stuck in my throat, I'm coughing like crazy, it's not coming up, and that it's moving is really, really disconcerting, to say the least. I called my doctor's office and left a message with the nurse. I didn't hear from the nurse until five hours later, and she said that someone would get back to me regarding what it is/what to do/whether to go to the ER. I haven't heard back I don't know whether I should go to the ER tonight - if that might be an overreaction. I know I'll spend another night sleeping upright...

Well, thanks everyone for listening.

I say try to vomit
Probably not the popular choice but if nothing else works...
Then ER

Sounds like it could be acid. Try taking a Pepcid or something for immediate acid relief.

Thank you for the advice. I am already on pantoprazole and famotidine daily for GERD, which I've had for years. This doesn't feel like GERD.

I ended up calling my doc tonight. I'll be seeing an ENT tomorrow for an endoscopy to see what's going on.

Thanks again everyone for your input. I appreciate it!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
