Having a History of Gerd

Recommended Posts

I am seriously considering VSG, yet I have a history of GERD. Am I wasting my time? I have not suffered from GERD for the last 3-years due to small changes in diet, and going on the CPAP, but knowing what I know about GERD, I do not wish to return to that nightmare. I'm afraid that when I have my consult tomorrow, my doctor is going to push the more invasive by-pass surgery. If that is the case, then I will have to do some more in-depth soul searching...

If you have severe acid reflux, it is best to have gastric bypass over sleeve surgery. The problem is that if you go for the sleeve and then after surgery GERD appears, then the main option is to go from sleeve to Gastric Bypass. These are expensive operations. I had severe acid reflux (GERD) prior to surgery and went with gastric bypass. One of the factors in that decision was that if I went under the knife once, I sure did not want to go under again. Once is enough for me.

I had GERD that was well-controlled with Prilosec for almost 15 years prior to (gastric sleeve) surgery. I'm still on the Prilosec now, but only because I'm afraid what might happen if I go off of it..

My reflux was also controlled, 1st by prescription omeprazole, then I just saved my money and bought the Great Value brand from Wally-World. Eventually I weened myself off the drug, about the time I started the CPAP therapy. I would get reflux so bad, that the next day I was litterally sick with flu-like symptoms (w/ a low grade fever).

I guess I need to start re-searching by-pass surgery... we'll see what the doctor has to say.

Nothing worked for me besides Prilosec. Generic omeprazole didn't work, Nexium didn't work, Prevacid didn't work. Prilosec was it.

If the doc and I can come to an understanding of what I can expect after surgery, Prilosec would not be too bad of a trade off... unless my new stomach rejected it.

I'd talk through it with the surgeon. I used to have acid relfux a lot (though wasn't medicated for it). They said that by fixing the hiatal hernia during surgery I'd be less likely to have it even though a sleeve can make it worse. Turns out they were 100% right, no reflux at all now. Worst case if you have it and the hernia fix won't solve it then you can still do a bypass, which solves reflux totally, which is nice.

Thanks for that, kind of gives me hope. I talked with two people who have been sleeved, and both said they have little to no issues with reflux. But neither had issues with reflux prior to surgery either. Uggh! A good heart-2-heart with my doc will definitely be helpful.

I had an upper GI camera procedure done some years ago, and was checked for a hiatal hernia. Luckily, I did not have one. To my benefit, I have not had issues with reflux for a few years now.

I had my initial consult with the doctor today, and based on my history with GERD management, he recommends that I stay with the sleeve, as the best tool to use on my weight loss journey!

Same thing my doc said. Everything has been great! Haven’t taken my omeprazole since surgery & pour Taco Bell fire sauce on everything I can.

I have Gerd. I was on Protonix 1x per day 40 mg. He made me get EGD done. Then there was an dent is my stomach. Had to go to a specialist and have another EGD. He said at one time my spleen must have been enlarged at some point. I did have horrible reflux. I take protonix 40 mg 2x a day, and carafate 4x a day and finally i do not feel like a ate a ball of fire! Discuss your concerns with your dr.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
