I’m leaning very heavily towards the gastric sleeve, mainly due to reduced risk and less issues with Vitamin deficiency. I would love some feedback from y’all who have had either procedure. Pros and cons that are maybe not listed on some of the articles I’ve read etc. No better reference than personal experience!

I had the RNY. I love it. Yes there are some things that can happen but...either one has ups and downs. I have been very successful with mine. But the bottom line s you have to make your decision on which one will work for you. Good Luck

My surgeon said both are very safe and effective, and I could have whichever one I wanted. When I asked him which one he would choose if he were in my shoes, he said RNY gastric bypass without hesitation. Better data supporting better outcomes, and the surgery-related complications are rarer these days, especially with surgeons who do hundreds of them every year.

If you think that the gastric sleeve has more risk, you've been misinformed. Research actually shows that there is less chance of complications with bypass. This information comes to me courtesy of both Penn Medicine and Christiana Care. Although the difference is really statistically insignificant, like a fraction of a percent to one percent. The prevailing advice that I've heard has been to go with gastric bypass if you have T2 diabetes or a history of GERD. People report having problems with severe acid reflux with the sleeve. Again, your mileage will vary. If you're diabetic, you may want to consider bypass.

It's between you and your surgeon. We don't know your entire history . There are pros and cons to everything and depending on the person some cons may be worth it. So no one really can say. I'm happy with my sleeve.

Wow, this discussion has put me back on the fence; I have had a history of severe acid reflux, that went completely away once I was put on the CPAP machine (severe sleep apnea). I really want the sleeve, but not the reflux issue. The by-pass, to me, is too invasive for me to consider... I have my initial consult this Friday, so this will be a hot topic for me and my doctor to discuss.

My bypass wasn’t invasive at all- 5 small incisions in a circle around belly (about half inch size incisions)

Bypass surgery eliminates reflux and maximizes weight loss.

I would also check out Home many people end up having additional surgeries from sleeve to bypass - not sure why but it seems like a lot?

Good luck with whichever you choose!

I was sleeved on 12/14/17 and it was not a good choice for me. I ended up with severe reflux/GERD and a stricture that made life unbearable. I couldn’t eat or drink anything without vomiting.

After having 3 endoscopies that didn’t last, my surgeon and I decided the best route was a sleeve to bypass revision. That was on 2/13/18 and I feel it was the best option for me. I haven’t had any heartburn or nausea since.

As far as the pain/healing process goes this time around I’m more sore, but I’ve also had 2 major surgeries in two months.

This was just my experience, but had I been more informed prior to my 1st surgery I would have gone with the bypass just based on the reflux relief.

Sorry about that; to clarify my statement on invasive, I was referring to the re-arrangement of the digestive track in a by-pass procedure. My mother had by-pass and has done well, but later told me that had the sleeve come along when she was going through the process, she would have had the sleeve instead. In all honesty, both are scary procedures to me.

I understand. I would swear they didn’t do the surgery if it weren’t for amount I can eat :). I don’t notice any of the rearranging wtc

My surgeon gave me the same option either would be approved. He told me he recommended the sleeve and if years later I hadn’t lost enough with sleeve I could do revision to rny. Revision!! My plan is to have one surgery, not a potential second. Also I have pretty bad gerd after telling him that he suggested it would be best for rny, he said if I suffer it would be worse after sleeve. 5 day until surgery!!

I would suggest the RnY because of your history. That's what my surgeon recommended for me and based on my personal research that was the best option for me. I just had mine on 2/14/18.

Look into the SIPS procedure. I too was on the fence but my surgeon was studying SIPS and it’s been amazing so far. All the plusses with very few minuses. No dumping, GERD, cured my dt2 and has longer successes than VSG
A majority of them are being done in Utah,NJ and at Duke. You can find some surgeons that are doing them around the country. Many have been doing it as a revision but I had mine done all as one

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
