How long after surgery where you able to start drinking regular coffee? I had to stop drinking before surgery...so I’m wondering if I’ll ever be able to drink it again...I really miss it!

Thank u for this question cause honestly this morning I smelled coffee
At my child's daycare and I almost took it from the teacher..lol.. it smelled so good.. I tried to do Decaf but it is just not the same...so I was actually going to ask this same question...

Search the board for "coffee" and you'll get a billion threads on the topic. Most plans allow for Decaf right away. Some want you to stay away from caffeine for several weeks to months.

I started working in regular coffee after a month or so. I had to start out with 75% decaf and 25% regular. Would get the jitters something fierce despite being a major coffee drinker prior to surgery.

Regardless just be mindful of creams/sugars as that can add a lot of empty carbs & calories if you aren't careful.

Why is caffeine bad? Diuretic? I don't drink coffee, only used 5 hour energy drinks when I had headsches

That's the most common argument from doctors. The concern is that since it can be difficult as it is to get your fluids in early on that having a diuretic in your diet could cause you to flush Water out of your system quicker than you should. There's a lot of debate on that and whether or not it truly impacts anything. Personally I think it comes down to people tolerating things differently and it's a matter of listening to your body. By the time I started adding caffeine back in I had zero issues getting my fluids in for the day, and coffee was always in addition to my usual 64 oz.

I first tried it two or three weeks after surgery. I added some cream at first, but that quickly went away. My suggestion? Have a sip. Wait 5-10 minutes. If you tolerate it well, have another sip. Repeat. If you don't tolerate it well, you're not ready. Good luck!

My doc doesn't want patients drinking caffeine for the first six months post-op because it can be an appetite stimulant. I've been drinking Decaf since a couple weeks pot-op and I really don't miss the caffeine. Very surprising.

I caved and drank within a month, I think. I only have 1 cup a day and it takes me forever to finish. As long as you are meeting your Fluid intake I think it's fine. But, of course, check with your surgeon. They all have different rules.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
