TMI....but I wanna ask..

Recommended Posts

Surgery was 2 weeks ago, I’m fine, healing great, etc. Ever since I had surgery my bowel movements have all been a maroon color. I told my surgeon he said it must be from liquids/dyes, or something I’m taking in...but it is still happening like daily. It’s kinda freaking me out. Has this happened to anyone else? I’m trying to stay calm and not freak out but it’s kind scary to think it could be blood. Advice please!

Just to be safe you may want to request that your stool be tested or call your surgeon back and ask if there were blood how would it look. If he describes what you are seeing in your stool, put some pressure on for that stool test. I have ulcerative colitis and flare ups cause me to have blood in my stool. In my case it's typically obvious when wiping.

I'm glad you are feeling great other than that concern. And, it may be nothing to worry about but it's not worth taking a chance. I'm in week 4 post-surgery and my stool is yellow. (Gross, I know, but figured I'd share in case that color appears. lol) :206_cat:

Yeah he did describe the way blood would look, but I keep googling and freaking my self out. He described it as “squiggles of ketchup on a hot dog” and that’s not it the entire stool is this color so that’s what made him say something from the diet.....thanks for the reply!

Definitely nothing like that. Often blood from the upper GI area would be black (it gets digested) VS red. Lower down it might be redish to bright red. Are you eating anything at all with dyes or that coloration? Are your Vitamins colored? The fact that its consistent would seem to make it more likely that it's dietary (as presumably with that much blood you'd have other symptoms now). You could take a cell phone pic and show him.

Are any of your Vitamins or Protein Drinks dyed a certain colour? My vitamins are liquid and bright orange, so you can guess that any and everything coming out of my body is also bright orange lol.

Geez louise — that is not what bloody stool looks like! It would only maybe look like that if your anus was bleeding. Ask your doc for an ‘occult blood test’. They will smear a tiny bit of stool on a card and add a drop of something that changes color in the presence of blood. Easy peasy and can rule out the possibility of a GI bleed.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
