Exercise / abdominal

Recommended Posts

I was cleared to exercise at 6 weeks and started a Bariatric wellness program at a gym. I spoke with the office and don’t have any restrictions but when I asked about skiing she said to be careful. Six weeks is just a number and I need to listen to my body. She didn’t say no but a little vague. I didn’t ski that weekend but now I’m a little nervous doing crunches at the gym or too hard a workout. I feel good and doesn’t even feel like I had surgery. Curious how other people started working out and did you have any restrictions. I’m 7 weeks now. Thanks!

I just had my 2 week post op with my doctor and she cleared me to start exercising. In fact she was adamant I start sweating and not just by walking. I have no weight restrictions, she just told me to listen to my body and if it starts to hurt to stop. (Don’t try to do 50 lbs bicep curls ). I’m still going to start a little slow because my incisions aren’t completely healed shut yet and I don’t want open them up. I was surprised because I thought I would have to wait 6 weeks but she said there was no reason to as long I used common sense.

I’m almost 8 weeks out and have been going to the gym every other day for about 4 weeks. If you were cleared, with no restrictions, then my thought is just listen to your body - if it’s uncomfortable or any pain, stop it for awhile. I have had good days and some not as good... those days I take it light. I think skiing can be intense but it doesn’t have to be.. so take it easy until you know how it feels? Don’t know if that helps at all, but best of luck.

I started walking day after surgery and kept adding to the distance and time as I got further out from surgery. I was walking 2 miles a day about 2 weeks out. Now I'm 8 weeks out and using a stationary bike and Jillian Michaels DVDs. I notice fatigue pretty quick on the ab portions of the DVDs but it's nothing awful.

I was a good 8 weeks before I could do crunches, now I am 10 weeks out and doing some hardcore workouts with a gym...I tried to do crunches at 6/7 weeks but was still getting pain in a few of the incisions. Pay attention to your body!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
