When to increase intake?

Recommended Posts

I am 8 days post-op. Since coming out of surgery I have been told to take in 30ml of liquids every 15 min to reach my goal of 64oz per day to stay hydrated. The first 2-3 days this was uncomfortable but doable. The next 2-3 this wasn't a problem and I found that 60ml wasn't uncomfortable. Yesterday and today I'm beginning to think that I mentally feel that I shouldn't increase the amount without speaking to my surgeon for fear of stretching or causing damage to my healing ouch. When did you increase Fluid amount and intake frequency?

If the liquid is Water and you can keep drinking/sipping, that's okay ... BUT don't forget to cease 15 to 20 minutes before your food intake.

happy Water is going down smoothly. at this early point in

the game, i was told to take small sips, increasing gradually.

i was told not to gulp at your early stage - no damage will

happen drinking ever- (worry wart!! LOL) you'll be able to

gulp/ drink more at a faster pace, before you know it . don't

believe you can drink toooo much water. The more water

you drink the better.

holding a glass of water up, drinking to your health

and success.

good luck

Kathy

Not drinking Water around meals is much harder than I expected!! I set my phone timer and literally put it on my Yeti cup.

You should be able to increase liquids to your comfort level (small sips only) without any risk of damage. Just go slow and if it hurts slow down or pause. As others mentioned most programs recommend stopping drinking 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after eating (others want 60 minutes). Sounds like you're making good progress.

This early on you can trust how you feel. If it feels okay to drink more, then drink more. If you're drinking too much or too fast, you'll definitely feel it. That was the message I got from my nutritionist and that was also my experience.

Good luck!

The worst is not being able to drink using a straw. I used to use a water bottle with a straw and could drink 96 or 128 oz of Water a day, now it's a struggle to drink 64.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
