Should 200lb 5”6 and BMI 32 get Surgery???? Please Help!!

Recommended Posts

My doctor recommended to get sleeve surgery because of my family’s record of diabetes and high pressure, etc... I know I’m in the limits of obesity but I been fighting weight all my life and at my 30s is been harder and harder to keep up, so do you guys think this is a right decision??? Or I’m taking the easy way ((that’s what everyone said)) If I said yes I’m going in the 20th... please help!!! I’m a little nervous

If your doctor recommended due to your family history and current weight, then I would listen. Doctors usually recommend diet and exercise first and are reluctant to recommend WLS.

If you have type 2 diabetes currently, you might find a surgeon willing to do surgery. What are your specific current comorbidities? Have you done your research and thoroughly weighed the benefits -vs- risks of permanently altering your anatomy?

Has a bariatric surgeon agreed to do sleeve surgery for you?

There is nothing "easy" about weight loss. With the sleeve, or without it.

Holy heck, it’s not the easy way out. Just the successful way. I am you, only older. My BP was scaring me. I want to see my kids grow up. My starting weight was 205. I am 5’6”. Small boned and my weight was like all fat. I was size 18/20. 46 lbs down and still my thighs keep me too big for size 14 jeans. But I get compliments every day and still losing.

I could NOT have lost this weight by myself. I needed this Portion Control. And I wish I could show you something better than my weight ticker. I wish I could show you my blood pressure chart. Before July and after. Unbelievable. It means LIFE not EARLY DEATH. Even better than the weight loss is the health gained. I’ve started working out and I even went ice skating yesterday!

i have zero regrets. And the weight loss has been slow and steady. My BMI is still in the overweight range but we are heading toward normal. One big vote for you to do it. Hugs.

I got surgery at a Bmi of 32 weighing 192lbs. I’m 3 months out and now weigh 139lbs so 53lbs down. It was the best decision for my health I ever made! Good luck with surgery!

WOW! I'm two months out and stuck at 25# lost. Totally jealous of how well you're doing!

My weight loss is really slowing down now though, roughly 2lb a week (but I’m only about 13 lbs from goal) hope to reach it by my birthday in May!
25lbs is really good (when was the last time ya lost 25lbs in that short space of time) well done!!

It's up to you. I had the surgery because of my family history. I am perfectly healthy now, but being proactive is better than being reactive once something wrong happens. Plus the younger you are, I imagine, the easier it will be to bounce back after surgery. I'm in my 30s, good health, and bounced back quickly (I know it's not like that for everyone).

BTW- This is *not* easy by any means. It's a hard decision, pre-op is hard, post-op is hard, changing habits is hard.

But being obese is hard too, so choose your hard! :) good luck!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
