First week - losing too much?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 6 days ago. As of a few minutes ago, I have lost 16 pounds. Surgery weight was 270. I have had a lot of diarrhea and haven’t a test for C-Diff today, but I’m pretty sure that’s not it. I don’t have any of those symptoms.

I have been getting my liquids in without a problem and feel pretty good. I’m just wondering if 16 is a lot?

Keep in mind that not all of your initial losses are fat pounds. In the realm of bariatric surgery, fat loss is what matters.

The nurses at the hospital or surgery center probably infused several bags of intravenous fluids into you before, during and after your procedure. These IV Fluid bags weigh a substantial amount and make it appear as if you've gained/lost more than you truly have due to Water weight.

Also, you lose weight and volume as swelling decreases.

Don't worry...this will probably be the last week you ever lose 16 pounds. :)

A lot can have to do with extra Water and edema you might have carried. Your Fluid level can also be hormonal, and you might be a touch on the dehydrated side, even if you're getting your required fluids.

You do go a few days without consuming calories that week, and you do burn a lot of calories healing from major surgery. I think it's pretty common to lose around ten pounds or more....but how much of that weight it really fat loss, and how much is water redistribution is a big guess.

Also, because dehydration is such a risk, they tend to load you up on fluids at the hospital. You've peed most of your spare fluids out at this point, so it's extra special important to pay attention to your hydration.

Also possible, you're just a smokin fast weight loser....which would be too cool, no?

Stay hydrated and let us know what your monthly total is in a few weeks:)

These comments are so helpful for me too on the other end of it having lost little - just 8.8lbs 2 weeks post op. I haven’t weighed myself again since and 3 weeks on Saturday. I’ve been eating little, and also had diarrhoea which is more just liquid in, liquid out I heard. I had my period also.

So maybe it was all the fluids and my body trying to balance everything it’s been through out?

I am a fast loser. You can see the monthly stats in my signature. That said, I am 5’8” and started with a high BMI. The first week I was loosing 2-4 lbs a day and lost 19 lbs on my 10 day preop diet.

Everyone is different. If you are a fast looser I would count your blessings.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
