Sleeved and sent home

Recommended Posts

I know Dr. Borland does surgery and then you recover at a hotel, how was your experience with this? I’m having surgery in my doctors surgical center and then recovering in the hotel that evening. I have a post op the next day and then I can leave the following day. I’m not using dr Borland, but that’s the surgical and post operative plan for my sleeve. Any advice on how your recovery in a similar situation went would be appreciated. Getting sleeved 11/30 in Dallas.

I was sleeved this past Tuesday at a surgery center about an hour from my house. Once out of recovery, we went home and I really don't remember much about recovery or going home. It is all a blur. To be honest, day 1 after I got home was rough. I had a tremendous amount of gas pain and nausea. I dry heaved and vomited a few times that day. I also had a very hard time getting comfortable because of the gas. Day 2 was so much better. I threw up that morning after I forgot to sip Water and drank too much too fast. But other than nausea here and there, I was much more comfortable. I had my post op appt on day 3 and all was good but he told me to stay on Clear Liquids for an extra day because of all the nausea.

Looking back, I would still choose to do it again outpatient. Even though I was uncomfortable and nauseous, I don't think being in the hospital would have changed that. My surgeon gave us his cell number and was quick to respond when my husband texted him some questions.

Good luck with your surgery!

WOW! Im so shocked. I live in Dallas but didnt have surgery here. I had my sleeve, stayed in the hospital for 2 days then spent 2 days in a hotel where the doctor came to see me there each day. I cant imagine going home so fast. Im so glad everything went well for you. [emoji4][emoji106]

If you don't have complications I could certainly see going home the same day.

My first day I was extremely high on narcotics, but from them on I've basically felt fine and would've had no issues going home.

I ended up staying a few days for unrelated complications from anesthesia but other than that pain was extremely manageable with no nausea and vomiting.

Walk enough (and have a good surgeon) and the gas won't be that bad either.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
