My father will be getting DS done abroad. How long will he need to convalesce before traveling back to the US?

My hubby went to Juarez, Mexico in June of 2016. They told us that he would have his Sleeve done and spend the night in the Hospital and then spend 1 night at the Motel. We traveled there early the day before his Surgery and stayed an extra day at the motel. Of course, I don't know where your Dad is going and how his recovery will be but I would be sure to let the Airport know that he will need a wheelchair because you just feel so weak afterward, and it is better safe than sorry. Right, those Airports are huge!!! Good Luck and I hope someone else will have more info.

Thanks Shedo. Does anyone know if a duodenal switch requires more down time than gastric sleeve surgery?

I had the DS this past June and was in the hospital one day. Day 3 my energy was the most zapped, but then I started feeling a lot better. It took me about a week to start getting my energy back. After two weeks, I felt great. For me, the DS was a much easier recovery than the lap-band.

When I had the sleeve 5 yrs ago, I felt no pain. I was in the hospital the same amount of time with both procedures. However, I felt way more pain with the SIPS, modified DS. My energy was non existent for a couples of weeks, and I personally needed a bit more help with the SIPS than the sleeve.

I had the traditional DS done by Dr Esquerra in Monterrey, MX. His standard time in the hospital is 4 days for a "virgin" DS, 6 days for revision. Mine was a revision; I travelled home immediately upon release from the hospital and was fully capable of negotiating two flights and a 90 minute shuttle ride home without a lot of pain. I worked from home starting the 10th day and felt tired but good. I took a nap during the day which helped quite a bit. Of course, YMMV, but that was my experience. I was fully functional within 3 weeks but if I had it to do over, I would probably allow a full two weeks before attempting to work.

I am in the middle of my third week after having the sleeve with the DS and my gall bladder out. I agree my energy was zapped for the first few days. Also just general movements caused pain. The tiniest sips of Water caused me to have gas. I was kept for a second day. I can't even imagine riding on a plane that quick. It was bad enough riding in the car. Any bump caused pain. Turbulence would be murder and I would think the gas from sipping would be exaggerated on the flights. Also - good luck trying to get enough Protein Drinks on the flight for those first couple weeks. I would think he should wait at least 5 days to a week before flying, especially any long flights.
