spicy indian food

hungry.gif Hi first of all hello too all who are banded going to be banded pre op post op i i am a Pakistani woman who has Pakistani food all time i like to know if any one out there who loves spicy food and if you eat it and its very spicy do you drink Water straight away or do you wait i heard that you cant drink same time as you eat as this is called dumping confused.gif i am on a currently on a active waiting list and i am trying to find out as much as i can about eating after lap band surgery especially about Asian spicy food ,oh and sorry about my spelling mistakes help.gif

I don't eat spicy food merely because I don't care for it but plenty of bandsters do eat it.

Dumping is not something that happens with banded people. Dumping is when someone such as a gastric bypass patient eats a bag of chocolate and then they become very ill. They break out in a sweat, feel nauseated, feel faint, and often times diarrhea. We don't do that, that's a whole different procedure that causes dumping.

You don't want to drink Water with your food, you can drink before you eat or an hour or two after you finish eating but not during eating. The idea is to eat a solid Protein and it will fill your pouch and will slowly drain into your bigger stomach thus, you'll be full for a long time. If you drink Water it makes the solid Protein in your pouch a slush and it will drain faster, you'll be hungry sooner, and it will defeat the purpose of the surgery.

I eat authentic Indian food all the time - spicy, too. No problems. I can't really eat a lot of rice so I just spoon a little bit of curry or dhal into small bowls and enjoy.

Couldn't live without Indian food. So delicious.:hungry:

thanx that realy helped i was not so sure i am due to be banded soon im on a current waiting list which i have 5 more months to go i just wish the list moves up a lot quicker as i am prone to illness with my wait i have hight colestrol high blood pressure angina diabeties sleep opnea sorry about my spelling i am trying to find out as much as i can but i am on for a gastric band thnxz again

so you say you eat spicy food but what if its very chilli and you have to have Water do you wait or do you just drink the water will it make a diference once next time one knows not to make same mistake just make sure not to eat too much spicy just mild and thnxz for reply much aprechiated oh sorry about my spelling

I find if I drink while I'm eating, it makes me spit up Water. The food is getting trapped in there, and the water builds up on top, so I have to spit it up. I was weaning myself off of drinking while eating, and was down to 1-2 sips per meal, but now I can't even tolerate it.

You don't "have to have" a drink while you eat.

If 0 is not hot and 10 is the hottest, I eat up to a 7 since my banding 13 months ago. BUT I haven't eaten whole hot peppers (cooked or otherwise) because I am a little worried about what they might do to my slowed digestive system. So the spice is either from ground hot pepper in the curry or whole pepper cooked with it - and I just leave it on my plate. Eventually, I may give whole pepper a try, but not now. If I do eat whole pepper, I'll be sure there are no pepper seeds for reasons which you can understand.

Although I am not Indian, I find Indian food very band-friendly but I just eat small, small amounts as a bandster. I live in the Middle East (Abu Dhabi), so the Indian food is the real thing and I assume that Indian and Pakistani food are similar.

I love too eat Indian/Pakistani foods as well. I have steered clear of the very hot Vindaloo's but using that 0-10 scale I think I've climbed to a 7 as well. I do sip small amounts of Water while eating. It's not reccommended but for many of us it is still do-able. The problem is that it can "flush" the food through the pouch faster making you hungry sooner or if you wait until you have already started eating to take the first sip it can set on top of the food already in the pouch and feel very uncomfortable as someone else already mentioned. When it gets a bit hot I can also eat very small amounts of rice and Naan if I chew it EXTREMELY well, I chew and chew until by the time I swallow it is the consistency of a very thin paste. A possibly better alternative to any of the above is actually to try using some a little extra Raita with the dish. I find it very helpful on removing the heat from my mouth and its definitely better for the band that the water, rice or Naan breads.

Count me in as another Indian/Pakastani food lover. I find that since I was banded (I'm 20 months out) I cannot tolerate vindaloo, but I can do with any spicyness up to about a level 6. Anything higher irritates my pouch and makes my opening swell up to the point where food can't pass.

On the Water issue...I don't sip Water to make the spicyness go away, BUT I always try to have sliced cucumbers around (which really help to cool off the mouth). Or, I will chew a mouthfull of Naan just to soak up the spices/oils and then spit it out into a napkin (gross, right!).

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
