Erosion is when the band begins to erode through the organ. Think of a tight piece of string tied around a marshmallow. Over time, it may actually cut into or wear through the skin of the marhmallow. That's erosion.

I was looking at the Before and after pages (which are amazing and inspirational, btw) and noticed there were people who had had their bands removed because of erosion, and some who had been rebanded. Is there a shelf-life to the band, as in, after x number of years, you could have erosion? Thanks for all your wisdom!!

The shelf life of the band is... the same as your life. It is designed to be a lifetime implant. Erosion isn't the band itself eroding, it's specific to breakdown of the organ's integrity.

Erosion just kind of happens. One of the things thought to be a significant contributor is being too tight. This would make sense. Another is the surgeon's skill/know-how/preference -- HOW the band is placed. My own thoughts - it seems logical that the type of band you have would also have an impact, but that's just me thinking, nothing that's official or backed up with literature.

You could erode 8 months into it, you could erode 20 years from now. It doesn't happen often, at all. But it can happen.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
