Any other sleeved Jews have a much easier fast on Yom Kippur?

Recommended Posts

From last night to tonight, Jews fast on this holiday. Normally, fasting is quite difficult. After dinner until bedtime is usually fairly easy, but the next day, by noon I'm usually ravenous, dizzy, low blood sugar. This year, 9 weeks since being sleeved, I expected it might be really hard because now we need Protein almost every 2-3 hours. I was concerned.

The last thing I ate was chicken Soup at around 6 pm Friday. I spent the day today in services and didn't feel even slightly weak until 5 pm. I did sip some Water here and there, never fasted with zero water. But I never felt actual hunger. By 6 pm I was really looking forward to food, and had some sliced turkey and pastrami at 7 pm. 25 hours, the Fast was EASY PEASY for the first 23 hours. What a difference.

(I do not advocate fasting for anyone sleeved, but there are various religions where fasting is a thing, and I find it interesting how easy it was.)

Glad it went well. Did your surgeon say you can fast at 9 weeks? No judgment but seems abit soon as your still healing. But if your surgeon says its fine then wonderful.

I never avoid Water like some do on Yom Kippur. I wasn't going to my surgeon for religious advice. One day without food, 9 weeks out, was ok. I was listening LOL to a "higher authority." I think he would be glad I was drinking water. But I found it interesting that the sensations of hunger are still gone, and I'm glad, not because I will ever fast except this one day, just because now to me hunger means I need Protein. It now comes as a weakness for nourishment, not a lusty craving.

there were a zillion homemade and storebought Desserts at the party. Normally I'd eye them and "need" to taste them all! Now I look, and ooh and ahh and compliment the maker but I don't even want them in my mouth. I love to bake and I no longer love Tom eat the stuff I bake. It is like a miracle. I'm so happy.

people said the pastry Cookies I made were out of this world delicious. Late in the night when I was putting the leftovers away, for the first time, I took a fingernail sized bit and put it in my mouth to see if I could taste what they tasted. Nope. It tastes yucky yucky sweet to me. I'm so happy.

i eat "dessert" every night if I want some: one square of 90% chocolate. Almost no sugar at all. I do not eat fruit so it is just right in terms of sweetness. It's actually a Prebiotic healthy vegan food at that low of sugar.

So I intentionally planned my surgery for 9/25 knowing Yom Kippur was 5 days later. I didn't fully fast. I had Water and Protein Shakes but mostly due to my post-op diet. I forced myself to drink, as I had absolutely no hunger. One funny thing that happened is that I'm so off on day and time right now, I tried to take my daughter to Hebrew school today. Duh - no school today due to the holiday weekend.

I didn't fast. I'm struggling so badly with getting my Protein and Water in that I just couldn't do it.

That is okay your higher power what ever you believe in will know you are wanting to keep your safe in a safe place which is what they will want, they do not want you to join them to soon, so good you listened to your body :) you will be able to soon.

I understand that fasting is not to be done anyway if you have medical or other needs. But I wanted to do it and since I was two months out, I felt comfortable trying, and I did drink Water.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
