Can I puree anything and would it be acceptable?

Recommended Posts

I'm on Amazon looking for things to stock my pantry with & saw Progresso canned Soups and wondered if I can take their Split Pea Soup or Italian Wedding Soup and whizz the crap out of it in my Vitamix and it be acceptable for pureed stage? :D

I'm looking on this site for recipes and am having a hard time finding any without reading/scrolling five pages in....I know we're all well intended but the posts sometimes get off topic or bulked up with other things....thank you!

Mr dietitian said that if I can get a generally acceptable food through the blender and it can pass through a fine strainer (or cheesecloth) then it's okay.

Check with your practice dietitian or your surgeon.

Purees still need to meet your nutritional goals, so no you can't just blend anything. Protein first.

After my RNY (I am 4 years out) my PA told me that anything that I could puree was ok. But I really think he meant with added Protein. I had a severe reaction to watermelon because of what he said. LOL I figured that watermelon was safe enough without pureeing it. Man, I was so wrong!!! I had the back door trots so bad and it had so much acid!! You can just imagine how bad it was!! So yes I think you can puree anything buy like was said get your protein in also. Good Luck

Check with your surgeons office but I was allowed to eat well mashed tuna with a bit of light mayo during pureed stage.

I also pureed scrambled eggs with some chunky salsa for a "huevos rancheros" puree meal, it was pretty good. And I was able to have lentil Soup that I made myself because the lentils are tiny and get so soft. That was my go to yum food for a long time, it was very flavorful. I was able to freeze small containers to save for later.

Check with your Dr. seems they each have very specific idea's regarding what is right and what is not. While I cannot have any citric fruit (oranges, grapefruit, lemons, etc); tomatoes, V8 juice, or anything along this line for almost 6 months I have noticed that some from this site have had some of these items as early as day 2. I would hesitate to have puree a Soup with tomatoes if your Dr does not want you having them for several more months. We have to be careful with the slightest item, food - movement - medication - whatever in these early months as the sack inside continues to heal

I find that unless one is a strict vegan/vegetarian, almost anything can be obliterated to tiny particles in an excellent blender then mixed with 25mL, 50mL, 75mL, 100mL or 125mL of pourable raw egg whites.

These amounts of egg whites offer an extra 15g, 29g, 44g, 58g or 73g of extra dietary Protein respectively.

Egg whites blended into anything else are near to neutral. Makes swallowing anything else easy for most people.

My dietitian and surgeon applauded this idea for protein building.

Each 55g (2oz) egg only adds 7g protein plus a whack of fat and may kick your cholesterol count way out. Egg whites are negligible to zero cholesterol depending on brand or processing.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
