Band to sleeve revision question.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have had my band since 2003 and on October 3 I will be getting the revision to sleeve. I have heard weight loss is slower in revision patients than someone that was getting weight-loss surgery for the first time. Does anyone have experience with this and has it been accurate for you? I'm very short and I have about 50 pounds to lose. I maintained over 100 pound weight loss for all of those years. But I have been having band complications for many years now as well . Now the pounds are creeping back on.

Weight loss will be what you make it.

My band (placed in 2005) was converted to a sleeve on 3/30/2017 and I've lost 85 pounds to date since surgery and nearly 115 since I started the process of getting sleeved.

Some of it was my doctor standing at the foot of my hospital bed before surgery saying "you beat the system once, don't do it again!" It kinda put the fear of God in me and has driven me to give this one a hearty effort. What's also driven me is the fact that I've made a permanent, anatomical change to my body as opposed to the band which could be removed so there wasn't as much dedication to it, I guess. Why go through this major change and not give it your all?

You are right Paul. I'm actually pretty scared to remove part of my body. There was always comfort in knowing the band was removable.

I had a band place June 2011, lost 100 lbs., and then began having complications all to gain the weight back. Not only did I gain the weight back, I gained two different sites of horrible pain, both the band and port. The port site was almost too much to bear. I had my band revised to a sleeve due to complications last Thursday and so far, I feel such a sense of relief having that contraption out of me! I have had an excellent recovery and jokingly asked the doctor if he actually did the sleeve.. Hoping to make the best of my second chance! I'm having a hard time not overdoing it after surgery!

Oh and honestly vsg feels more natural! I remember washing dishes and my wedding band slipping around on my finger that's how I imagined the lapband inside of me slipping around.... :-/ and sure enough it was doing that too.. I went to bed every night hoping relief would come soon to remove that appliance from my insides and so glad I did!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
