The iOS app is awful

Recommended Posts

One thing I've been noticing is that the app for BariatricPal is awful. It has very limited functionality and doesn't even keep you signed in. Also, I noticed that when people use emojis on the mobile app, they get turned into non-parsed BBCode on the web version of the forums. Why is this?

You definitely shouldn't be having these issues!

We are releasing a brand new and totally redesigned BariatricPal app within the next week or two. We'd love to have you as a beta tester!

I'd love to. I have TestFlight on my iPhone already. :)

I had the iPhone mobile app but it was nothing but frustration when I used it, so I deleted it. I'd try a new one if it was improved.

Personally, I think the mobile app should have a similar layout to that of the forums. Like, when you login, you'd see the forums you would normally see if you signed on the website. Not to mention features like editing the details of your surgery on your profile.

I know I'm teaching myself Objective-C and Swift now, but if I wrote this app, I'd be dreadfully ashamed of myself. It's so slapped together!

Well, I hope you get to beta test the new one so you can identify improvements before they put it out. Glad you spoke up!

While they're making improvements, maybe they can fix the notification sound. It has always sounded like it gets cut off abruptly, like it's half a sound. Does that happen to you? It was like that on the mobile app, and it's still like that on the website. Not a big issue, just a minor annoyance.

I've noticed that too. It is... distinctive, so I don't confuse the forums with Facebook, so on that front, it does work. However, I'd like to have a better notification sound too.

Hey there! Thank you for providing feedback. As Alex mentioned we are actively developing a dedicated BariatricPal App, and as such we now have complete control over its development. This will not only allow us to address bugs and issues quicker, it also enables us to consider and implement requests from the entire BariatricPal community, which is something that our current app has prevented us from doing.

With regards to the issues you're currently facing, unfortunately there isn't much we can do at the moment. The BBCode is something that will resolve with the release of our own app as well as the being logged out. With regards to the notification sound, I'm not able to replicate the playback cutoff mentioned here, but we'll definitely pay very close attention to this and hope to prevent it with our release.

With regards to the beta testing - that's great that you're interested! Feel free to shoot me a private message with the e-mail address that is associated with your Apple account and when we're ready I'll reach out and send you an invite.

Thanks again!

One other thing that I've noticed is that you aren't integrating your store into your app, which seems like a missed opportunity. I mean, sure, I'm not going to buy from your store. I get a better deal buying from Bariatric Advantage directly, but somebody might want to buy from your store and it'll also allow you better advertising/monetization opportunities.

I couldn't agree with you more. This is already in the works! Thanks for your input and suggestions. Keep them coming, please!

Do you really get a better deal by buying from BA directly? What type of discount are they offering you?

Alrighty, here are a few more:

  • Apple Health integration: You know, device-specific integration might be delayed for a time if you're using the health database already coded into iOS, Apple Health. It's a great repository of things including weight, steps and even a count of flights of stairs taken. I'm not sure what you could do with that data, but you might think of something. After all, activity is a crucial part of success after bariatric surgery (so everyone involved in this process has told me). Also, in doing so, you would be able to capture the data from those of us who use Apple Watches.
  • WLS Magazine: There's a way to integrate this feature of the site into the app in a way that is more pictorial and attractive. Look at the sidebar on this site. That might be understated for the real estate a desktop/laptop screen might have but it would be perfect for a mobile app.
  • This isn't really an app-specific issue, but more a site-wide issue: If I select to use metric units to note my weigh-ins, why is it that some areas of the site (such as other people's weigh-ins, the sidebar which reads "together we have lost", etc) are also shown in imperial units (lbs)? Also, it does make me wonder if the "together we have lost" bit takes into account those of us who do use metric as the ticker shows this for me:
    59b2dee51529c_Capturedecran2017-09-0812_16_42.png.4eeb4c263390055e6970fe312c77cefb.png
Which is interesting, since I do not weigh 137,5 lbs but I do weigh 137,5 kg (which is roughly 303 lbs). Is that number being lowballed, not including the weight of those of us who use the site in metric?

The most important thing is that the app should be an extension of the site and should put your best foot forward. It's an opportunity to have more control over the design and layout of how a mobile user experiences Bariatric Pal. Use it to your advantage.

Also, my discount from BA is 15%.

Oh! One thing I've just thought of: a Vitamin tracker (both taking and supply tracking). It gives us, the end-users, the benefit of an app that tracks our vitamin usage (including when we took our Iron vitamin so we can know when it's okay to take our calcium citrate vitamins) and also allows you the benefit of upselling Vitamins when we start to run low.

@Alex Brecher I don't know about anyone else, but I get a BA punch card that gives me a free item when I have accumulated 10 items at my surgeons office, and a validation code to use on the BA website so I know I am getting the Vitamins my nutritionist recommends instead of having to compare all the nutritional info on each product. They also have a quantity discount on the web, can't remember what it is, but it is similar to BP's store.

Just a side note on BP's store, I had bought some of my vitamins and Protein Shakes from there, and did a subscribe and save on a couple items. For all other subscribe and save type services I have used, an email is sent prior to the next shipment so you have an opportunity to make any changes. BP's service does not do that, and the last shipment I had intended to change flavors of my Calcium but forgot, and now I have a large supply of a flavor I didn't want to get again. Customer service was not helpful and kind of like "oh well", so I discontinued all of my subscribe and save items. I realize that it is my responsibility to change my order if that's what I want to do, but it is nice to get that reminder before shipment. I'm not saying I wouldn't use BP again, I would, just not the subscribe and save service. I think BP has some good sales and deals. When I'm due for more I'll shop around for the best price.

Thanks for the BA info! I always wondered how they tracked territory sales. The punch card is a genius idea.

That's so odd that you didn't receive a notification prior to your BP Store renewal! I double and triple checked and we absolutely do send out notifications 3 days prior to orders renewing. I hope it didn't end up in your spam folder.

I wish there were a way to see user's info like surgery type, date, high weight, current weight, etc. It provides a lot of useful context to the discussions. I have tried clicking on screen names but see none of that info there, either.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
