The Big Gastric Sleeve Diet Guide

Recommended Posts

I came across this while roaming on the net, and found it worthwhile to share. Of course it is 100% recommended to follow your Dr.'s instructions. This guide may promote questions to ask your dietitian or Dr. for your optimal success. I am still in the learning phase as my 2 week pre-op starts Sept. 5th, so the post surgery veterans already know this.

WEEK 5 AND BEYOND

Continue to introduce foods one by one to see how well they are tolerated. Watch out for Constipation, diarrhea, and upset stomach.

  • Eat three small meals every day.
  • Hydrate throughout the day.
  • Stop drinking fluids 30 minutes before each meal.
  • Avoid snacking. If you do, choose a nutrient-dense food (fruit, vegetable, nuts).
  • Take your recommended daily Vitamins.
  • Ensure you get 60 grams of Protein.
  • Supplement daily with a Protein Shake.
  • Incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Make it a habit.
  • Avoid sodas.
  • Prepare for bad days. How will you cope when you are in a difficult situation?
  • Find an accountability partner. Go to a support group and make friends that you can call.

I didn't read the first bunch, just skipped to the "forever" plan.

I do take issue with these plans that recommend 3 meals with no Snacks. Of COURSE you are going to have to have a protein shake every day! We can't eat enough in 3 meals to begin to meet our requirements.. at least not for the first year.

For example: I am 5 months post op. I can eat 2 eggs for a meal. That is 160 calories. (160x3=480 calories, plus the 200 calorie protein shake is only 680 calories!). I can't eat more than 200 calories of ANYTHING in a meal.. so that is still 800 calories a day!

When I can eat more at a time, I'll decrease the number of meals that I eat. (I usually consume calories 6-8 times a day).

I ran across that too.... but, my Dr. wants his patients to follow "his" directions. I questioned my dietician about some things in that website & she said to follow their instructions. So, I would say...... follow your Dr's orders & talk to the professionals you are using to verify & answer all your questions/concerns. ..... Better to be safe, than sorry. ......... Hope that helps.

That is why I wrote in the original post ---"Of course it is 100% recommended to follow your Dr.'s instructions."-----. This was just a reference guide, as every Dr. has their own instructions to follow. Just some info to give newbies or someone interested in having this procedure a idea what they will have to do, ,,,,, and for life to be successful. It is not meant to be followed to a T.

-Thanks-

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
