Can't handle anything but water - 2wk Post Op

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I had my sleeve done on 08/09/2017 (so almost 2 weeks ago), and I can't have anything other than Water. In hospital I was able to drink Soup, milk, juice and Protein Drinks fine (I didn't come close to finishing any of them but I could stomach them). My hospital stay was extended to 5 nights instead of 2 because I got the flu post op. I was able to go home on Monday today is now Saturday and i've had nothing but water, since being home everything makes me feel sick, no matter how tiny sips I take. Today I have been forcing myself to drink an Optifast Protein Shake but even a 5ml sip of it makes me feel queasy.

I see my Surgeon in 2 days for my 2 week post op follow up, but I am just curious to how I could stomach it all fine in hospital but now I'm home anything thats not water makes me sick :/

I am quite concerned that I have only had water for almost 1 week as i'm sure this will lead to deficiency and muscle loss rather than fat lot.

Did this happen to anyone else?

Thanks

Chiara :)

I had my surgery on 8/4/2017 and was given Clear Liquids for a day then full liquid the next. I was lucky enough to keep everything down but didn't finish anything or come close to it.

To this day, I can barely eat anything and end up putting it away.

You seem to be having an odd issue with only keeping Water down and not feeling sick. If I drink just cold water, I feel my stomach get full quick and it gets queasy.

If I drink Vitamin Water Zero or Propel, I can drink a few sips and not feel queasy, just full/it's uncomfortable.

If you were holding everything down in the hospital, you should be able to hold those same things down now, unless your stomach staples or stitching came lose or undone.

Your might also just not like the other stuff your drinking/eating due to taste buds.

Are you able to keep everything down, but you just feel uncomfortable?

I have no issue keeping it down, I just feel nauseous. I have not vomited at all since surgery, it was just in hospital I didn't feel nauseous.

In particular when I was in hospital my dr gave me an up & go ( a nutrient based Breakfast drink) and I could have that fine, since being home my mum went and bought me the exact same flavour of up & go but now if I have a sip of it I feel like I will vomit.

I'm having small sips, and waiting quite a long time in between sips as I found I feel extremely sick if I drink too quick or too big sips.

I have noticed the stitching on my belly button is giving me more pain, but that is external stitching not internal so i'm not sure why all this is happening! :/

It seems your just nervous love, and the stitching on your stomach will remain sore, if it's the larger one where the stomach was pulled from.

You also might be taking sips too quick or larger quantity sips.

Did you do clear liquids the first night and did the Doctor/Nurses clear you for full liquid to see if you could handle it?

It's also good that you have thrown up also, but in the hospital, they do give you medicine to prevent nausea and a small patch behind your ear to do the same.

I'm not sure which stitch my stomach was pulled from, I think the right hand side because thats where I have most pain overall

I'm defs not taking too big sips or too quick, I did that a few times in hospital and learnt not to, i've even had sips from a measuring cup so I know thats not causing the issue.

After op I was on the IV drip, and only had Water for 2 days, on the 3rd day is when they gave me broth, milk and juice for lunch and broth and up & go for breakfast

I'm going to ask my dr if i'm allowed medicine to prevent nausea, they didn't give me a patch behind my ear, they would just inject the anti nausea medicine into my IV drip

Hello !
Sorry to know you have this issue...
I also faced this and even felt the Water heavy on my stomache. I even had vomit for 3 days and went to hospital to hydrate my body.
Yet, the day I fixed the way I slept I never felt this again.
Try to sleep at 45 degree, you head higher than your body.

Moreover, a tip
Our feeling for hunger and being full has changed than before...
Whenever you feel your stomache nauseous and you haven't eaten for for than 2 hours, it means that you are hungry...
That's it for me

Please try to change the way you are sleeping and update us

Wow! You have been having a real time it sounds like. We had our surgery the same day by the way. I have been able to stomach all the fluids. At first it was super difficult to consume ever 24 ounces a day. Now I am up to about 36. Still not enough though. But I haven't vomited once thankfully. It's good you'll be seeing your Dr soon though.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
