Pre-surgical liquid diet question

Recommended Posts

So I am on day 3 of my liquid diet. My surgeon said that I might need a stool softener for Constipation, but I am having the other spectrum. It's loose and several times a day. Is this normal, or should I worry about IBS. I know that sounds crazy, but my surgeon said that if I have IBS that my trips to the bathroom after the surgery would be very frequent. I have never had a diagnosis, but have had issues with loose stools when I don't eat right. I am just a few days out and letting my mind play with me a little.

Thanks!

I was told that it's completely normal to have loose/liquid stools on the liquid diet, since we're not putting anything solid in our system.

Its provably the diet. I had loose stools on the pre-op diet then Constipation post op. I take stool softener about once a week too help now. At first I was taking 2-3 a day and milk of mag on occasion. It was horrible. But now it's pretty much figured itself out. I hope lol

liquid in, liquid out LOL! It may or may not happen after surgery, depending on how your body processes pain meds, you're all good!
PS...I'm having the opposite issue so I'm a little jealous.

My surgeon told me to take Benefiber every day. So I have 5-8 teaspoons a day. This was pre and post surgery. I was was also told to keep taking it even if things were "loose/liquid" as it would help. So far no real problems, an occasion bit of diarrhea, but mostly it seems to help.

I have about six weeks until my sleeve. All of you are taking this is stride. I have an ileostomy, so it looks like I better stock up on bags. Maybe when you get to the pureed stage, things will get better. As I read all of your experiences, it just amazes me that all of you just keep pushing through with the help of the people on this forum. I will be coming to you all for the odd things that are happening to me, just to be reassured that it's okay and it will pass. I know that when I'm healed up and down to my average weight, it will always be a struggle. I would really like to be an inspiration to the new people like you all have been to me.

I don't think loose and frequent BM on a liquid diet is a probable indicator of IBS. Sounds perfectly normal to me.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
