How much leave time are you taking?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious how much time are you taking from your job to recover after surgery are you taking? What is typical, barring any complications?

I have a relatively sedentary job, medical setting at a desk mostly, so nothing too strenuous.

I'm hoping to take 2 weeks off. I'm a hospice nurse.

I am a secretary at a school. I am planning on taking 1 week. I had hoped to get surgery during the summer, but my thyroid did not have the same plan. I figure I can rest when I get home. I am able to drink at my desk, so I can power threw.

Sleeved Friday July 28th and was back at work on Monday....by choice. I have a medical deskish job. I wanted to be sitting up drinking and walk every 1 hour within the office. So far no problems.

Aren't you tired and extremely weak. I was sleeved 4 days ago and just got home yesterday. I'm so tired and weak. I plan on going back to work this Monday but I just don't see it happening yet. I also have depression and anxiety and feeling it creep up today.

I work in a busy med surg floor and do heavy lifting and they do not allow you to come back light duty. I was off 6 weeks but was scheduled for my vacation week the week I would return do technically 7 weeks off. I felt great by then. I went to Florida for my vacation week and felt really good by then. I told them if they could let me do secretary I could come back sooner but they can't change your pay rate and will not let nurses do secretary unless they also have a team of patients. But by 6 weeks I was better than when I left. I also had my eating and drinking routine pretty well down pat by then.

Thanks for your responses, I was thinking 2 weeks would be sufficient.

I took a week off and worked remotely for one additional week before returning. I think if I had to, going back to work after one week would have been fine (desk job)

I think I got used to the preop very low calorie diet so I am not weak. I will admit that ,y only diagnosis is obesity. Understandably you might need more time off considering the other diagnoses you have. Listen to your body and mind before you go back to work.

I had RNY. I could have gone back after a week or so if I had a sedentary job. I work in a hospital so it's lots of walking and standing. I went back after two weeks. I was totally fine. I was getting bored at home.

I'm taking 10 days (11 if you include surgery date itself) I also have a desk job and I will have plenty of time to be able to drink and everything! My surgery isn't until Sept. 7th! :)

I'm planning on taking at least 6 weeks. That's what my surgeon recommends, so I'm going to listen to him.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
