Lower Abdominal Pain, cramps. (Optifast 2nd of 4 weeks)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Has anyone or is anyone currently experiences pain while on Optifast? I have the strict plan of only Optifast shakes, bars or Soups and celery, cucumber and SF Popsicles. I woke this morning with severe cramps like I had diarrhea but I didn't. I had to lay down and go into work a little later. I feel gassy and bloated too. I know I can make it. Plus I am already down 15 lbs. I can get past hunger but pain is something else.

I didn't do Optifast but I've done Medifast and Nutrasystem in the past. I know with some of these products the type of Protein can cause gastro discomfort. On Nutrasystem, I was constantly passing gas. It could also be the artificial sweeteners in there.

Sorry for your discomfort!

Hi Buklova -

I feel ya. We have the same doc. I'm being sleeved next week.

They are very rigid with their diet. It is very frustrating when you see that other docs aren't so rigid. There are all kinds of liver shrinking diets that incorporate real food, or at least a choice of Protein Drinks.

Makes me wonder if they are getting kickbacks from Optifast! (Nestle)

Good luck choking it down!

OMG, I was thinking the same. I have done a Keto diet before and it worked. I think there is somekind of kick back epsecially since they required 3 of the shakes a day. I would do better if I had the Soups or bars.

I hope your surgery went well!

Hey - thanks for the well wish! I am home from surgery now. Was told everything went well - day 1 wasn't bad, day 2 was the worst, I feel 90% better now (day 3) than I did at day 2. I've read many people feel really good at Day 4. I am trying to stay hydrated - not concentrating too much on Protein today (although I had a quarter cup of Fairlife milk so, 3 gm protein). So much easier to drink skim milk than protein shakes!

Nurses at Lake Norman regional were great. I did feel remorse due to the discomfort I felt in the hospital- not really pain, but a yucky full feeling and confinement because of the iv and stuff. However, now that I'm home I feel much better.

when is your surgery?

Hear, hear to that. I was just commenting on Nestles' morality/ethics.

I object that most bariatric surgeons and websites put Optifast VLCD shakes up as the recommended ones. This weight of numbers pushing for Optifast masks the fact that Nestle have "bad form" across a lot of the world.

How dare they ask $AUD79.95 for 18 sachets of weight loss shake powder when they sell the confectionery (Kit-Kats, lollies and candies) and many the high-fat pre-fabricated meals available in my supermarkets!

These evil profiteers will advertise and promote foods that lead to the problems then be on hand to sell a solution.

Most Bariatric surgeons? Not in the US, but perhaps in Australia. A few push them here, but really not many.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
