Getting back into things

Recommended Posts

I've finally been able to start back up with part of my former exercise routine. Yesterday and today I workouted out on the exercise bike. I'm anxiously awaiting when I can resume swimming. Prior to surgery I generally swam an hour of laps three to four days a week. I can't walk very well due to a genetic skin condition that causes extreme blistering on my feet even with short distances, so getting exercise in the first three weeks post op has been limited.

Congrats! Swimming is a lot easier when you are smaller.

I actually never found swimming hard as a large person. I grew up as a competitive swimmer. I always laugh to myself when these super fit guys would be in awe of the 280 pound woman lapping them, doing butterfly and flip turns. It was heartening to know that because of me they could see that just because someone is obese that they can also be physically fit.

I bob like a cork when swimming.. my kids could hang off me like a raft... sorta reminded me of the mom on The Incredibles.

I didn't learn to swim until later in life. Swimming is about technique. I can outdo college kids even though I'm slow because my technique is better than most all of them. Only exception is the Europeans who do breast vs. free. Breast is my worst stroke. I did 200 fly before I did 200 breast.

I'm a competitive swimmer now. You should get back into it. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
