Frustrations and Cravings

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I just had my sleeve almost 2 weeks ago. My doctor had me do a 10 day pre op diet that consisted of Protein Shake or Protein Bar for Breakfast and lunch then, dinner 3oz of meat and some veggies for dinner. I ended up drinking a ton of Protein Shakes and Soups. Post op, I am struggling to get through with my full liquids diet. I tried different brands but the smell makes me gag, I am so over it. I am eating soups, fat free yogurts, Water, Powerade zeros and I find that i'm getting tired of that. I am getting frustrated with the process because now, I find myself feeling hungry when I wasn't feeling hungry right after surgery until about this past Monday or Tuesday. Yesterday, I didn't eat just drank fluids all day. Being frustrated, I've thought about buying foods I'm not suppose JUST to satisfy that hunger and, get the Protein and minerals that I need. My question is: How do I ignore my cravings while at the same time, satisfying my food intake?

Have you tried throwing the Protein Powder, some fruit and ice in a blender? I have rarely drunk the shakes straight up. One of my faves is taking a cup of cold coffee, a caramel shake packet, Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup (like from a coffee shop - I use the Torani brand) and some ice. Into the blender and I've got a 24 gram of Protein Shake. I still drink this to this day.

Another version I like is Fairlife Skim Milk (13 grams of Protein in one cup), a scoop of chocolate protein powder, one tablespoon of PB2 powder and a few pumps of sugar free caramel syrup. Say hello to your snickers protein shake with about 35 grams of protein. (Oh yeah - ice and blender.)

You need to get the shakes in at this point otherwise you aren't going to get your protein you need to heal your body. Keep experimenting.

Don't give in to the head hunger!! I had RNY so a little different, but, stick with your surgeon's recommendations. Yes, it's boring, but what is the end goal?

I agree with mixing your shakes with a little bit of fruit. I like shakes, convenient and fast and I've been using shakes for about 2 years one way or another.

Call your surgeon's office and get an appointment with the NUT. Or psychologist. My surgeon's team keeps telling us to use them if we need them.

Good luck.

I haven't tried adding fruit to the Protein Shakes, yet. I have cooked oatmeal in vanilla protein shake. I also put some unflavored Unjury Protein Powder in sugar free Jello pudding powder and use a protein shake to make my own Sugar Free Chocolate pudding. I've been wondering if I could have smoothies. If I go to a juice bar or smoothie place and get one made with protein in it? I don't meet with my doctor until Thursday and, I have a lot to ask. I have heard about Fairlife Skim Milk and been wanting to try it. I work nights so, I've been looking for a lot of products that in individual packets or single bottles to take to work and keep in the refrigerator. I will be calling or emailing the NUT or go by her office. I'm a RN and got the surgery done at my hospital & I sometimes see her walking the halls but I will probably email her first.

Thanks for the tips guys! I am really trying but the struggle is 1,000% REAL!!

Do not have the smoothie place make you things - put them in your own blender at home - you can control the amounts and quality of the items that way. It makes a huge difference. You can mix these ahead and put them in a Blender Bottle and leave them in the fridge at work at the beginning of your shift. shake a few times before drinking and you're good.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
