Hi all, so I have one month left with the dietician before I can see the surgeon and although I have drastically cut back on smoking cigarettes, I still find myself smoking a few when I stress on daily life things. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know if it will have any effects on my surgery itself? My goal is always to quit and I have gone from a pack a day to maybe 5 cigarettes for the whole week

Almost all surgeons require you to be tobacco free, sometimes up to 6 months pre op. Nicotine hinders healing and causes stomach ulcers after WLS. I quit in September 2016 and my surgery was 6/21/17. I quit cold turkey and have not touched one since, but I understand where you are coming from. It's hard to break.

My surgeon had me do a nicotine urine test 2 days prior to surgery and if it was positive my surgery would have been cancelled. Some surgeons do a test at the beginning of your journey and prior to surgery to be safe.

Good luck quitting! It's for the best! You can do this!

I had to be smoke free for 3 months before surgery, which was June 1st for me. (September sleever). After being a hard core almost 2 packs a day smoker for 17 years, I never thought I'd do it.

My last cigarette was may 30th. Haven't had one since. I can't even pretend it's not the most difficult thing I've ever done. But, it did it.

You're only going to quit when your ready. And if your not ready, then maybe your not ready for surgery either.

This is about getting a second chance at life. Ask yourself, how bad do you want it?

hang in there! you can do it. it helps to make a list of why you are doing this whole thing to begin with....then when you feel the urge, bust out your list!

Hi there. I will suggest that you try a zero nicotine eliquid used in a personal vaporizer. An electronic cigarette. Be sure it is zero nic. I know many many people who have been very successful this way. Me included.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
