pre-op diet help plz!

Recommended Posts

I got my surgery date yesterday! It's June 20th. I have a class next Monday to learn more in depth about the pre-op necessities but would like to start my pre-op diet now to get a good 2 weeks in before surgery. I have the basic outline but I need more examples of what the pre-op diet includes. Could you guys please give me a general outline for what your pre-op diet is? Thanks so much!

Mine was 2 Protein Shakes, one for Breakfast, one for lunch, and a sensible meal (protein/veggies). I was allowed some veggies, non-starchy, for Snacks.

My center had two options - one for those with a BMI over 50 and one for BMI between 40-50. I'm on day 6 of the second option right now, which is 2 Protein Shakes + 2 meals (60% proteins/40% non-starchy veggies) and you can throw in sugar-free popsicles, sugar-free Jello and broth as well. I've found that after doing a shake for breakfast and lunch, and getting in at least 100 oz. of Water for the day that I am only doing one meal. My calorie count has been between 575-1000 each day, and I'm down 13.4 pounds and feeling pretty dang good.

My group had me on under 1,000 calories a day with 60 grams of Protein, almost no carbs and very low fat to shrink the liver. Plus 64 ounces of Water. To get to that I would have a shake in the morning (30g), a salad with protein (grilled chicken) and balsamic vinegar as dressing at lunch (I could put in about 4 cups of lettuce for about 40-50 calories) and then dinner would be whatever protein I made for the family with another salad. If I needed more protein, I would have an Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt for 15 grams and 120 calories. Sugarfree popsicles, Jello and broth were all available as well.

We have to do a liquid diet for 2 weeks before. Roughly 800-900 calories. 3 Premier Protein shakes, 1 for each meal. 160cal, 2 gm sugar, 5 gm carbs, 3 gm fat, 30 gm Protein each shake. In between they say 3/4 cup greek yogurt, but I don't really care for it, so I will try, but may switch to regular yogurt. I bought sugar free Jello in case I want to "chew" the jello!!, and G2 for a treat. May do a tropical smoothie as a treat the green one with the lowest carb count and splenda.

What are you guys doing???

Thanks everyone. I got a definitive answer. I am allowed 4 Protein Drinks, and up to 6 servings of: 1/2 c cream of wheat, 1 c carrots/celery, 1 sugar-free jello/pudding, 6 oz broth, 1/2 c unsweetened applesauce, per day. I have lost almost 13 lbs and have been on the diet for a week. Pretty exciting!

My diet is very similar to yours in the sense I have to do just the shakes and yogurt too; however I have to drink their shakes. I plan to drink premier after surgery. The banana flavor is pretty good! Want to try strawberry

I had 2 Protein Shakes (breakfast and lunch) and one somewhat normal/high Protein meal for dinner. Basically just needed to stay under 1000 calories, which was pretty doable given that two meals were protein shakes.

I would suggest stepping outside of the vanilla and chocolate shake flavors. I found strawberry, banana, and Cookies and cream to be pretty good too!

I have the liquid diet requirement too. I don't have to start until Aug so these are some good ideas (like the Jello for a 'chew' option). Is premier a brand of Protein drinks? Why those specifically?

Yes Premier Protein is a brand. It was recommended by my Dr. It has 30 grams of Protein, 160 calories and 1 or 2gm sugar. It fills you up but is only 11 1/2 oz., and you don't have to mix it!!! :) The chocolate and Carmel are my favorites, but strawberry and banana creme are pretty good. I haven't seen a Cookies and creme flavor but I would try it it there was. I just bought vanilla for a variety. I have never tried it.

I've made it through 6 days now with no cheating and haven't been hungry. The monotony is the hard part. As of last night I have lost about 8 lbs in 5 days! I'm good with that!! I'm on the down hill slope now!!

I drink premier protein clear. It's fruit punch flavored, 16.9 ounces. It has 20 grams of protein, 90 calories and no sugar. It's what I've been living on!

Thank you! Now that I google it I see the Premier Protein looks familiar. My nutritionist had some in her office. I'll make sure to add that to my shopping list.

dgeo102 what is G2?

I suggest buying some Bariatric Soup too. You can add unflavored Protein to get more than 15 grams of protein. After surgery you may crave savory after all the sweet!

Also, Premier Protein is fine but it is not the best whey protein. Look at bluebonnet and Unjury. Good luck to all of you!!!

I am on 4 Bariessential shakes a day that can be mixed with Water or skim milk. You can add in sugar free and caffeine free additives. For breakfast I will take vanilla Protein, cup of skim milk, and an orange crystal light and it tastes like an Orange Julius. For chocolate protein power I will add PB2, skim milk, and ice in a blender to make a smoothie.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
