Hi all. After a lot of thought and deliberation and discussion, my hubby and I have decided to go on this journey together. We're in the earliest possible stages-our first appointment with our surgeon is on the 19th. His cousin used the same surgeon in December and has had wonderful success, and has been an inspiration.

My husband and I have decided to keep our decision private and have only told a select few.

My question-can anyone tell me about their approval process with State of Florida Avmed? I'd love to hear about others' experiences with Avmed. I'm looking forward to going through this process with as much support and information as possible. Thank you!

It didn't work for me, and I appealed the decision. I ended up having my sleeve done by Dr. Illan in Tijuana...best decision ever! Good luck!

You need to have atleast 4 consecutive months of a supervised diet with a Dr or dietician, meet with a psychologist who will ask you a bunch of questions about why what and how you feel about being overweight and also he makes sure you know what you will be undergoing as far as the surgery. You need a letter from your primary Dr recommending throw you would benefit from the surgery and that you are a good candidate because of xyz. Must have a bmi greater than 40 or greater then 35 with 2 comodabilities.

After all that is submitted then you get a response within a week if approved or denied. Yep, pretty much hoops and hurdles.

You were denied by Avmed?

Yes, I was denied once then lost the appeal. I even had 2 comorbities and submitted letters from all of my specialists including a psych evaluation. I was told that I wasn't "sick enough", I needed a hospitalization for one of the comorbities for them to even reconsider my appeal.

I'm on my way home now from getting my sleeve with Dr. Illan and will be switching my insurance to Aetna next month.

Can you tell me about the process you went through for Dr. Illan? When did you first reach out to his office? What were you required to do? What's the timeline? Cost?
Sorry for all the questions. I'm just trying to get options in the event I'm denied. Thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
