Looking for a Gastric Bypass Mentor / Buddy

I had my surgery on March 3, 2017, and I am feeling quite depressed now. Starting to wonder if this was a gigantic mistake on some levels. I cannot find foods that agree with my pallet or tummy. I just didn't think I would have such a difficult time. I have tried salads, but the dressing don't agree. I am so sick of chicken, fish upsets my stomach..etc etc. If anyone has any help or time to talk and help, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm only eating 1-2x in a day.

Hello Paula, thank you for writing. I guess my problem is, I cannot find a food that agrees with me, outside of the yogurt. I have tried egg, meats, fish, tuna etc. I get the greatest of stomach pains, or just doesn't agree with my taste buds. I am starting to get discouraged because I am eating at most 300-400 calories a day. I am feeling lightheaded and just upset. Any other tips would help.

Hi there, I had RNY Oct 3, 2016 and doing great. It is had at first. salad wasn't on my allowed list till 3-4 months out as the greens and raw veg can be hard to suggest I think. I know the foods are boring right now, but give yourself a pat on the back for getting this far. I struggled with nausea in the evening the first 4-5 months and still have some trouble feeling tires from time to time. My dietitian said 3 months of feeling tired is totally normal and to not push it. Any questions let me know :-)

Thank you for writing back, and yes, the foods are sooo boring right now, and my taste buds are all out of wack. However, I will try to scale back after reading the posts and take smaller baby steps. -hugs and thanks again!

Do you find that one day a food is okay and then the next day it makes you very sick? That's been my problem. I've been getting in my Protein and liquids okay but almost all food tastes sour to me. I am three weeks out from surgery...

I am already doing that at 2 weeks out. A friend of mine told me that during chemo, she lost taste as well. She said she played up the taste that she did like. Such as sour, she did a lot of things that were sour. If it was bitter she also did those. Just becarful, don't want ulcers from the acid. Hope that helps.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
