Liquid diet breakdown

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I have been reading these forums for a while and just recently started posting. My surgery is June 1st and today is Day 7 of my liquid diet and I am seriously at my breaking point. I am sitting in the couch sobbing because I am so tired of liquids! I am hungry and I feel nauseated and weak all the time. I seriously thought about cheating today and eat a slice of deli turkey but I know I have to be stronger than that so that's why I am here... This is so hard

So if your on the East Coast then you've made it through another day! & if you're on the West Coast, then you're almost through it! Try to take it a day at a time and when that's too much, just focus on getting through each hour.

Keep us posted, k?

Sorry you are having such a hard time. If you need to chew something you could crush on some crushed ice. Be creative and make them with flavored water or Protein Water. That might help. Also, get some SF Popsicles. It's a hard road here, but you have all our support and caring. Keep your chin up and remember why you are doing this. Good luck and bless you. You can do this!

Can you do broth or sugar-free Jello? Sugar-free popsicles are good, too. You're almost there! You got this!

The preop diet sucks so bad. I was on a business trip for half of mine which included lots of executive dinners out and me salivating. Not fun. However I did lose 21 lbs during that two weeks and that made it worth it. Hang in there and focus on the end result. I made a list in my phone of all the things I hated about being fat and read it when I felt weak and ready to break. It helped a lot. You got this!

Thanks for all the support everyone! Next Thursday can't come quickly enough. I am so... hungry... I upped my Protein so now I am doing two servings of the Unjury chicken Soup Protein Powder twice a day so that's giving me about 84g of protein a day and the reat of the day I drink Water, ice, popsicles, broth... I am just tired of it and ready to be over. So ready to be over. I am not currently doing any of the sweet Protein Shakes because I cannot stomach any sweet stuff anymore. In fact, if you told me to go get some real ice cream right now I would just walk the other way. Tell you what though... I am so looking forward to eating my one or two tbsp of cottage cheese that first week after surgery. Omg, that sounds divine right now!

Help! I am so confused. My surgery is scheduled for June 12th. My pre-op appointment is June 7th. Nobody has told me to start a liquid diet weeks before surgery like I keep reading in these forums. Should I be concerned?

You shouldn't be. For what I am seeing, every doctor has its own way of doing things. Some require a liquid diet, some don't. Some require after surgery, some don't. Just go by what your doctor tell you :)

I'm surprised you don't have to do one, though. Mine was for 10 days and was very difficult but I made it through. You need to do this to shrink your liver before surgery.

Pre-op is usually determined by your bmi. I had a 14day modified liquid diet, was able to have 3oz of Leah meat and 1/2 cup of veggies along with yogurt and SF pudding, and fruit cups.

The diet is mainly to shrink the liver, Lewis only just do a better job.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
