Possibly traveling alone. Tell me your experience please.

It's very possible I may be going alone. Is it realistic? When you check out from the hotel and are going to the hospital to have surgery, did you have the hotel store your luggage? Trying to figure out what I would do with my phone and anything I wanted in the hospital while I recover. Thanks

A large percentage of BariatricPal Team MX patients come alone and don't have a companion. This is one of the reasons we offer an English speaking "Valet" that assists our patients the entire time they're in Mexico. Generally, most patients go directly to the hospital from the airport and not to the hotel. You bring all your luggage to the hospital and then with you to the hotel once you're discharged.

I traveled alone and had no issues. I brought my carry-on rolling suitcase with a luggage lock to the hospital. My private hospital room had a safe in it so I kept my wallet and electronics in there when I was in surgery, walking the halls, sleeping, showering, or just away from my room.

I'm glad I traveled by myself so I could just focus on my recovery and sleeping. It worked out wonderfully - no regrets.

Ditto everything Marinagirl said. I was happy to be alone so I wasn't kept up by my hubby's incessant typing on his laptop. He would have been so bored at the hospital, and somehow things would have been about him. Finally I got to have 4 days to just myself, and it was all about me.

This is the best group of individuals. You are their jobs. They all love their jobs too. Please be generous with tipping they desire it.

Anytime I left my room a valet was there to walk with me. When you get to the hotel there is a valet for you there.

I traveled alone and didnt have a single issue. When I left the hotel I took my luggage with me. There was a safe in my hospital room but I ended up not locking anything up. Everything was right where I left it when I came out of surgery. The companions of the other people that had surgery the same day as me checked on me just as much as the staff did. Throughout the whole experience there was never once a time that I thought I should have brought someone with me.

I went alone and was glad I did. I have an 8 & 9 year old, my husband stayed home with them. I binged watched Netflix and didn't have to worry about other people. All you really need is cozy PJ's (ones that button up (for your IV) lip balm , slippers, and your I pad and phone w/Charger.

You'll end up meeting the other people getting the same stuff done, so your not really alone as bonds form fast. I would buy some electrolyte drinks to have in your room, the day your sent home, you might not feel like looking for drinks, although lots of people do. If your hotel makes you check out the day you go for surgery, they'll store you luggage, mine left me in my room. Pack light! Try only using a light carry on.

good luck to you!

I think it depends who you go through. Going with Dr. Illan through BariatricPal will ensure that you get wonderful care, not only from Dr. Illan and the hospital staff, but from the BP employees also. You are only as alone as you want to be. You can join their FB page and find someone having surgery on the same day as you and the valets are awesome. My hubby and I got to spend time with another patient and her sister after we were released from the hospital and we really enjoyed their company. I think going alone is very do-able and it is my understanding that Dr. Illan will call your loved one after surgery to let them know you are out of surgery and recuperating.

Travelled alone. Amazing experience. There was someone checking on me every hour, I truly never felt alone. The hospital has netflix so I binge watched all my favorite shows. Even after the surgery, there was someone who was assigned to me who took me out to the city for sightseeing and walking off the gas to feel better. I felt safe, taken care of and extremely satisfied. I was really supported by the BariatricPal staff and Dr. illan was amazing. He came to see me before the procedure to put my mind at ease, and the nutritionist was very helpful too.
In short, don't be nervous about going alone. I did, and I would highly recommend this and do it again.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
