Do you still dump if you are 2 or more years past RNY?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

For those that are more than 2 years post op from RNY surgery.....can you tell me if you still experience dumping if you eat something too sweet? I would like to know if in my future I could have a bite of cake or a piece of chocolate without dumping.

Thanks

I'm only 7 months out but I can eat a piece of dark chocolate and a tiny bite of cake without dumping. However, I totally avoid anything made with pure sugar. I had a teensy, tiny bite of a jellied fruit slice and while I didn't dump, I felt bad for 30 minutes.

bariatriceating.com has great recipes using the Stevia or Truvia baking blends. I've made the brownies made with black Beans, the pumpkin bread, and the chocolate chip Cookies. Not exactly like the full sugar originals but close enough to satisfy my sweet tooth without having to worry about dumping (which I have never experienced so far)

I don't know if you've had RNY yet or not (your profile says VSG, so maybe you're thinking of revising?), but most RNY'ers don't dump. The statistics I see thrown around is that only 30% dump. I don't know if there's any research behind that, but I do know a ton of RNY'ers who don't dump and never have. I don't, either. Sometimes I wish I did...

RNY here....i noticed a decline in dumping at 19 months. Now I very rarely dump. If I dump it's not from sugar but from Sucralose which can be found in some sugar free foods. I dumped from sugar free Cookies but I can eat normal sugar cookies. I could probably not eat a full slice of chocolate cake but I can have a few bites. Not cause of dumping but because it just wouldn't feel good in stomach too much sugar and fat.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
