No liquids for 24 hours normal?

Recommended Posts

Every practice is different. They wanted me to sip on clear liquids the day of surgery.

Different doctors, different guidelines.

I had Water and ice chips in hospital, and was clear fluids from then on...

Mine will be the same because they do a test to see if there are leaks before they allow any liquids, etc.

It depends on how long they have you in the hospital too. So I was in for only overnight. I was allowed liquids first thing in the AM and then we waited to see if I had any leaks.

I had my surgery at 10am and wasn't allowed to have anything to drink until the following morning after an upper GI to confirm there were no leaks. They should have you on IV fluids though so you won't get dehydrated. Congratulations on your surgery [emoji1303]

Had my surgery at 11 am, no liquids or ice chips until the next day (late morning), after they did the leak test.

I had my surgery Wednesday morning. Was allowed ice chips immediately. Had leak test at 6:30pm and was allowed Water immediately after. Started Protein Shakes the next morning.

My surgery is Wednesday and my doc said the same thing. Nothing by mouth day of surgery and then ice chips and Water the next day. It depends on the doctor and their rules.

I was told it was just until they do the leak test. But I was allowed ice.

It depends, my surgeon did the leak test while I was still under, so I was allowed ice chips when I woke up and then clear liquids.

I had to wait till muy leak test the next day before I was even allowed ice chips. I was given mouth swabs to help and I kept lip balm on my lips. That made a huge difference.

I wasn't allowed to have Water or ice for more than 24 hours until after they did the leak test, but they gave me a little wet sponge to swab my dry lips and tongue.

Well I survived but honestly going over 24 hours without Water was the worst! After my swallow test they let me have room temperature liquids but I couldn't have any ice chips. But after I was able to drink I felt so much better. One night in the hospital and back home now and feeling good. That first day sucked but I can't believe how much better I feel now!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
