How do you practice not drinking with food

Recommended Posts

Newcomer, lurking mostly.

I need tips on what are good ways to 'practice' the new rules for eating after surgery beforehand. I am concerned with no liquids during meals and how to manage that.

Thanks to anyone offering advice.

Not to be blunt, but I don't know how you can practice this. It's just something you don't do. You have to consciously decide you're not going to drink while you eat.

I know what you're thinking because I was someone who'd take a sip or more with/after each bite. When you get bariatric surgery, it's just not something you can do and expect things to work well. Drinking with your food causing it to wash through faster negating the benefit of whatever procedure you're having done. In this video, the demonstration begins around the 2 minute mark.

It's really not as hard as you think it is.

I didn't practice this pre-op, and post-op, I just worked to make it a routine like everything else. In the early weeks, I simply wouldn't have anything to drink near me when I was eating. Now, it is just what I do. You get used to it.

I drink like a litre and finish it 15 min before my meal. I'm sick of fluids by the time I eat. I was never a person that needed a drink with my meal though.

Practicing before hand is pretty pointless IMO.

Post op you won't do it because drinking will be a chore, eating will be a chore. Basically your stomach is going to teach you.

When I was banded this was probably the easiest thing to adjust too mostly because if you drank on top of food you would end up getting stuck. I agree though I think it's one of those things that's hard to practice. Luckily after surgery you have to take everything and think about everything you eat and drink. It's probably a bit different with the sleeve but hopefully somewhat similar.

It's funny, I was just mentioning this to my husband. After all the years of Weight Watchers, where they tell you to fill up with Water before and during your meal so you feel fuller sooner- I will now learn a whole new way. It will definitely take getting used to. I agree with not having water nearby during meals though[emoji1303]

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
