Therapy before surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My VSG surgery date is 4/20/17. Over the past few months, I've realized that I have an issue with being in control. I'm a married mother of 3 with a full time job that is very demanding so I have to be in control of my life or things will fall a part. I feel like this need to control every situation will affect me in a negative way with my surgery so I decided to start seeing a therapist. My first appt is this coming Saturday.

This process has proven to be just as much mental as it is physical and I want to make sure I am addressing both pieces in order to be successful.

Anyone else decide to go to therapy on their own? If so, is it helping?

Shy

I think for many of us, therapy is an essential part of our weight loss journey. For me, a lot of the eating I did was tied to my emotions. The emotional eating plus my endocrine issues are really what put me over the top weight wise. I think having someone to process with on a regular basis is going to do you a lot of good when it comes to this major lifestyle change. I wish you luck :)

I commend you for taking control of your issues in this way. And I wish you the best on your journey :)

I did therapy for six months, best choice I ever made ~

Therapy before and after! I check in 2 - 3 times a year. Some may need more. Some less but Good to have objective support system.

Thank you. I was able to get an appointment for next week. I'm happy I will be able to get one session in before surgery and will continue after surgery. I know what my issues are that cause me to eat, I just don't know how to fix them. I have always just ignored the issues and ate them away. Hoping therapy will help.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
