One year post DS and seeing slow weight loss

Hi everyone! I'm new to the site and the forum. I've loss near a 100lb weight loss one year after my DS. I'm noticing less loss lately....any advice? I also experienced earlier in the week severe abdominal cramping with little bowel movement but plenty of gas...help?

I don't have much info on the DS but I can say that I have gas big time and have had since my RNY in July of 2013. I have found something that really helps with gas and helps with digestion. It is a easy fix. I take PAPAYA ENZYMESthe great thing is you can buy them at Walmart for less than $5.00. They are great. Doesn't everyone's weight loss slow down? I lost my weight in 6 months and went below my goal weight. I did have some medical issues come up but I hear from other people that there is a Honeymoon phase where you lose pretty fast but then it slows down. CONGRATULATIONS on your AWESOME weight loss.

Yeah, weight loss slows. It won't stop, but it isn't as fast. That is normal. Your body can't lose 10 to 20 pounds a month forever

Hi OutsideMatchInside, My expectations of this surgery is not to assume I would forever loose 10 to 20lbs monthly, that would be an unrealistic in addition foolish assumption, right? However, deciding to join this forum I am hoping to receive honest and concise responses with less judgement. Overall, I assume we all here to motivate and provide each member with the necessary advice and support that will improve this amazing journey each of us have chosen in hopes of a healthier lifestyle.

You didn't provide any details on what your definition of a slow down is. A Stall or are you just losing 5 lbs a month? You didn't offer your calories, daily macros or anything.

DS is know for gas, really bad smelly gas.

Again with not details on what you eating, and in what quantities it is hard to provide detailed help.

I lost about 130 lbs by the one year mark, then in the 8 months since I have lost another 50. It slowed down, but I had lost the bulk of my weight (and so have you). I lost pretty fast then hung around the 250s for a while, then I dropped pretty fast to 220, hung out there for while, then hung out around 200 for a while, and now I am hanging out around 190 for a while. My body seems to take breaks from weight loss, but during the times the pounds are not dropping my body shape is changing and inches are dropping.

Did you have a full DS?

How much Protein are you eating/day? What about carbs & fats?

Thanks OutsideMatchInside! That was great info and clear detail to how this DS process can possibly work for me. My weight loss journey is similar to your experience. However, I notice i have loss 4 additional pounds after weighing myself today. I have also notice my Protein and eating intake has decreased. Lately, my protein, eating and exercise activity slowed down due to the demand of my job. I guess I better pay better attention and get back on track. The information you provided helps knowing because now I know I have to stay on my game with being consistent. i honestly appreciate your feedback....this is an ongoing battle that i must beat. Wow! Aspiring Evangelist your pics are inspiring! How did you do it? OMG! Just looking at your journey has given me a whole new perspective on how I am to go about accomplishing the weight loss goal I've set for myself. Thank you so much for replying to my request. As I mention to OutsideMatchInside, I've been practicing very little Protein intake and my appetite has changed drastically. I'm not sure if it is because of the Constipation, or a mental rejection to food due to the slow down of weight loss. I'd appreciate your feedback on how you remain on track because you are a true success case......thanks!

I'm glad. You'll get there too.

I'm unsure how much you're able to eat at 1 year out. I eat 125+ grams of Protein on most days. I hate to say it, but you need to try and force it down. Is there nothing you really like? I'm not talking about shakes (which if you can't stomach food then shakes are a necessity. I drank at least one for the first two years, postop, as I just couldn't eat enough) but real food. I eat steak, lamb chops, hamburgers, fish, fowl, deli meats, cheeses, nuts, etc. Anything and everything. Remember, there's no counting calories with the DS. Just protein grams and sugars (simple carbs, too).

What about your fat intake? That will help with constipation, To grease the wheels so to speak. How 'bout butter on your steak? Full fat mayo is a must. We need that fat to help us 'go'.

If I want to lose a few it'll be a ton of protein. With lots of Water and Crystal Light and very very low carbs. More protein & fluids = weight loss.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Aspiring Evangelist. I can begin to express how thankful i am to your advice. I am know able to wrap my head around this entire DS weight loss strategy needed for weight loss. Your thorough outline clearly assist me with understanding this surgery. I think I am use to practicing looking at the foods you suggested as a form of eating bad and unhealthy, but I know get why eating that way supports the type of surgery we've had. I am going to spend time researching the food lineup needed to better benefit me and how I can implement it in my meal plan daily.

        I had the sleeve 9/13/21 and just had a the sleeve to bypass revision on 5/3/23. My HW:321 (I'm 5' 8" tall)and I went down to 254 while doing my 7 nutrition appts required by my insurance company. So just changing the way I ate, I was able to get those pounds off w/o surgery. I have many Co morbidities mixed hyperlipidemia, diabetes, htn, MI due to covid. I had read and done quite a bit of research so I could choose the best surgery for myself and learned previous to my sleeve that someone as heavy as I was and all the Co morbidities I have, it was better in my situation to have the bypass but, my DR. Kept saying I would have the same results with the sleeve. Every time I would see him and say to him that I felt it would be best to just get the bypass, he just shot me down and said the sleeve would produce the same results! Why he kept asking me which surgery I wanted at each visit just to tell me the sleeve was all I needed still a mystery to me????? Let's just say, my Dr. Was wrong you see, the surgeries are both about the same price, but the sleeve is easier for the surgeon to perform so I think my DR. Just wanted the easier since he would get the same pay no matter what. After sleeve surgery I did go from 254 to 226 BUT that's just because you are healing from surgery and can't eat anyway as soon as I recovered! I was starving non-stop. I went right back up and stayed at 248. Still had to take cholesterol meds, blood pressure meds, diabetes meds etc. I'm now almost 4 weeks post op the bypass and feel great. I'm not starving all the time, went from 248 to 220 and doing great! Not only what you just read about my story, you also hear about a lot of people needing revision after the sleeve due to acid reflex like severe acid reflex all the time. So the bypass surgery is the only way to stop This reflux if you acquire this condition after sleeve surgery. The regain possibility is higher with sleeve than bypass so just think about all these factors before you make your decision. I wish I would have just had the bypass and saved myself from having to have 2 surgeries in under 2 years. The bypass surgery was also less painful for me lol! I don't know if the new surgeon was better or what but, I was home the next day. After the sleeve I had to stay an extra night due to the nausea and vomiting all night and for pain control.

      Who knew Filet Mignon would make me so sick. Leftovers from Mother's Day.  On the upside..next day I started walking outside a little over a mile without stopping or back pain. That's a bit deal for me considering how inactive I've been for years. Woot woot!

      Five-week follow-up for gastric bypass and now on lifetime food plan. No restrictions.  In all that time I was fortunate to get sick only one time, week 1, on Easter. Chicken broth...go figure.
