Recommended Posts

Is it OK to use patchest to quit smoking before WLS? I heard that a lab tests can be done to determine if you have been smoking. Just wondered if patchest are ok to use.

Yes Patches are ok, even the nicotine gum is ok. My surgeon said they can tell the difference between cigarettes and any stop smoking aid.

Alos, my surgeon did a test for cotnine and also took labs ladt week. My surgery is Friday, if i didnt quit smoking 3 momths ago, i wouldnt be having surgery. Every surgeon is dofferent but my surgeon requires 60 days of not smoking before surgery.

I would ask your surgeon. Mine required zero nicotine in the system because nicotine of any kind slows down the healing process so this would include any aids to stop smoking.

My surgeon said no nicotine at all. I just had a blood test for it and they're doing another one before surgery.
I quit cold turkey after 35 years of a pack a day. Showed all clear of cotinine in four days (blood test). It's not easy but it's easing up now. I really suggest reading Allen Carr's book. Best wishes.

When do they do the blood test? I started back up last June about pack a day. Quit cold turkey last Monday. Have my wrap appointment tomorrow. I'm nervous

I had one already (it could've been done at any time) and I'm having another at preop.

Assuming they just do a standard blood test (pass or fail) you should be clear. Stay away from all second hand smoke etc. I was shocked I came back clear for the blood. I certainly wasn't coming up clear on the urine cotinine tests I bought on Amazon. I've stayed smoke and nic free and plan to continue. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
