I know everyone is different, but...

Recommended Posts

So I had my surgery on March 23 and was discharged the next day (yesterday). I have a lot of pain and pressure in my left side, under my ribs and in my chest. Even breathing is uncomfortable at times. Laying flat on my back helps. Sometimes i get pain in my shoulder too (which I've read a lot about). The gas is horrible. Every time I take a drink of Water, I feel the air moving around and sometimes it prompts a burp. Other times, it's just annoying and uncomfortable aches. It's also hard for me to get up and down due to the pain where my staples are. I've checked the incision sites and there's no redness or leaking. I thought I would be able to recover quickly because I had a c-section with my last child and I didn't have to take any pain meds and I was back to work (only a few hours per day/week) 2 1/2 weeks after delivery. But this, all of this is extremely painful. I know everyone is different, but I can't find any threads on here that are even similar to my situation. Has anyone else experienced any of my symptoms?

Yes I had the same symptoms! The shoulder pain left side discomfort hurting to get up and down and I still burp and he cup ! Sip on your Water all day and walk around the inside of your house until you are strong enough to walk outside! Walk a lot and sip sip sip on that water! It gets better! I'm 5 weeks out of surgery and my stomach is still tender just starting to lay on my stomach for 3 minutes at a time!

Thank you for your response! It's comforting to know someone else has had the same symptoms. I'm trying to walk and drink. Balancing that with the pain is a challenge, but I am making it happen. Thank you again!

We are surgery twins I was sleeved on 3/23...what you're experiencing are classic signs of gas. I purchased some GasX dissolvable strips and keep them handy for the 1st lil gurgle or sign of pressure. Walking also helps alleviate gas pains. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
