survive without caffeine?

Recommended Posts

I'm still in planning for gastric bypass, but a webinar I attended said to avoid caffeine after surgery because it dehydrates.

How do you do this? I have avoided soda and coffee (11 years ago) in the past but this was before kids.

I drink 3 cups of coffee in the morning and a soda or coffee in the afternoon. I'm always tired.

I'm hoping that Losing weight helps with fatigue/exhaustion. And I have energy to do things. I've not been diagnosed with sleep apnea but I really wonder if I have it.

Has caffeine to no caffeine been an easy transition for those caffeine addicts??

I've a sleever but we caffeine freaks all go through the same thing :D

There's a lot of debate on the dehydration topic. My NUT warned of the same thing - that if you have caffeine you have to "replace" the Water it's going to help you pass. I'll say this - I peed a helluva lot more and with more urgency when I was a caffeine junkie prior to surgery, so I don't think it's without merit.

I did make the mistake of not cutting caffeine off sooner prior to surgery, so the fatigue right after surgery seemed a hundred times worse. After a few weeks my energy levels began to come back and now I feel back to normal. Mornings do seem a bit sluggish and harder to get going but it's gotten better as of late. I've tried to drink regular coffee and it hasn't agreed with me well since my sleeve. I can tolerate some now. When I make coffee I do about 25% regular coffee and 75% Decaf. I've actually come to like not having to rely on caffeine so much. I just love my morning coffee.

Btw...seems most doctor's require a sleep apnea test as part of the approval process so inquire about that. At least you can find out for sure if you do have it or not.

I had gastric bypass surgery in Nov. 2016 and I had to a an ice tea every morning and a coke zero for lunch and dinner. Right before my surgery I was done to 1 coke a day for lunch but made sure it was Decaf. I was so concerned about not being able to drink caffeinated drinks before the surgery. I am 5 month post surgery and have not had any caffeine and I am fine. I have decaf tea now and do not miss caffeine at all. You will be fine.

I liked what@Orionburn said. Cutting It back before surgery will help.

I'm here to tell you how to get caffeine without soda. Bad me! 🤣

First off, your doctor may have a time frame after surgery with a no caffeine period. Follow that. I think it was 3 or 4 months with my surgeon.

Secondly, use it responsibly- sounds silly I know. Just like so many other things, too much isn't good. I try to keep my consumption low and not over book myself. I have to remember that for me caffeine can help me but shouldn't be my fuel/I'm not supposed to be able to do everything.

I don't worry about dehydration because I get in a lot of fluids. But orionburn gave the advice I've heard about replacing the fluids.

I've found that I do have more energy since losing weight but still struggle sometimes. I've also found that working out helps my energy levels. If I workout first thing, I'm better throughout the day.

After surgery you'll find your balance.

Mio energy Water flavor drops are great. There are some other brands but they tear up my system. A lot of the other caffeine products have carbonation, which I avoid.

There are pre workout powders that have caffeine but they also have other things in them. Since I have never heard of these things and haven't had time to research them, I avoid these powders.

Good luck and all the best to you!

My nutritionist was different. I am allowed to have coffee after surgery & she suggested to add Protein in it (Premier as Creamer or a protein powder). This is my 6th week post-op, I can't drink a whole cup of coffee but espresso shots I can handle since they're small. I put a little Premier & half & half in mine.

Height: 5'0"
Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs.
Surgery date: 2/13/17
Goal: -71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs).
Current weight: 180.8
My profile picture is not me. It's my "FITspiration" body.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
