My pre-op diet is weird

Recommended Posts

My doctor wants me on a 2 week liquid diet with ZERO Protein Shakes or Protein scoops allowed, fruit smoothies only. (4-5 per day with Water, no milk.) Then says it's to induce ketosis. No broth allowed, either. Just SF Jello and Popsicles.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? I don't understand how I'm going to stay in ketosis eating nothing but fruit smoothies.

Mine was certainly not that strict....I was allowed solid food (proteins and veggies) right up until the day before surgery, however, I have heard of pre-op diets as strict or even more strict than yours. Many people are put on strict liquid diets with no fruit smoothie or Jello options.

I would speak to your surgeon or NUT about it if you're concerned. There may be a reason specific to your situation that determined the diet, or it could be that the surgeon has had the best results with that regimen. Best of luck!

No clue how ketosis is possible with the sugar in all that fruit, but call and ask the office just to double check to make sure it's correct information. I could still have fruit like strawberries or blueberries once a day on Keto but it was 1/4 cup - 1/2 cup. I can only eat 15-20 carbs to stay in keto but my sister can eat 35 so I do know it's different for different people.

Oh and just FYI, even SF Popsicles have carbs in them. I got myself into trouble eating too many a couple of weeks ago. I though they were zero like the Jello, lesson learned!

Umm that is not going to get you in ketosis or shrink your liver.

Are you sure this is a Dr you want operating on you? This is the worse advice I have seen ever.

They want you running on pure sugar!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fruit is one of the worst foods to try and get into ketosis !!!...
I was allowed NO protein only my shakes or bars or Desserts which were all vlcd and approved for fast weight loss although it was the liver I was shrinking.
I was allowed unlimited (restricted) veggies as well...

I have to say it's certainly a different approach he is taking

Right, that was my point too. They recommend 4-5 smoothies per day but warn not to use milk because the carbs in milk will throw me out of ketosis. I'm just puzzled.

Also they said my "natural stores of protein" are enough. I've never heard that before. :-/

I'd just do your own pre-op. Follow one that someone here (or all of them here) have used. They'd never know.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
