One year out, not losing enough weight?

Recommended Posts

so i had my surgery in omaha NE in sept 2015 and i moved to FL just a month after surgery due to family issues. my new surgeon says i should have lost more than 63 pounds by now. he even said, and i quote, "you're doing poorly". he also said that for me to be so young, i really should have lost over 100 by now. I workout every day, i eat no more than a 1,000 calories, i get all my Water and Protein and i'm losing about a pound a day (well sometimes i only lose half a pound) so i don't understand why i'm not losing as much weight as i should be. my new surgeon suggested i get lap band but medicaid won't pay for that. the only reason i got my surgery in omaha was because i was still on my mom's insurance so medicaid went a head and paid for it. but, now that i'm down here, the health care for medicaid is very poor. i can only see my surgeon 3 times a year. i don't know what to do at this point.

What type of surgery did you have? A pound to 1/2 lb a day sounds good to me. Were you always working out or just started? Also have your eating habits always been 1000 calories after surgery? How many carbs are you getting a day?

i had roux en y/gastric bypass

I was always working out. First it was just walking but now I go to the gym.

I used to eat 1,200 calories but I cut back. I get in at least 35 to 78 carbs a day. I keep track on this app.

It sounds like your doing right thing. Can try cutting down to no more then 35-40 carbs a day. See if that makes a difference. I know when I wanted to lose weight in the past cutting back on my carbs really did give me the jump I needed. I wouldn't recommend the band. I had mine removed 2 years ago. I'm now taking classes for bypass. Good luck I hope this is helpful.

What is your Protein target? Mine is 70 - 90g per day. How are you eating during the day? My NUT has us eating 5 mini-meals a day every 3 - 4 hours with no eating in between. You should have a Protein at every meal. Are you still following the 30-30 rule - stop drinking 30 minutes prior to eating, no drinking while eating, and no drinking 30 minutes after?

Was your surgery in 2015 or 2016?

If it was 2015, then I can see why he's concerned. However, if it was 2016, you're well within the normal range for expected weight loss.

In any case, if you're losing, keep doing what you're doing.

I'm actually having trouble getting in all my protein for the day. I drink Protein shakes but they don't stay down. I try eating protein packed meals but those hardly stay down. My target for protein is 75g per day but, honestly, nothing is really staying down. I am following the 30-30 rule. Also my surgery was in 2015.

For this surgery to be successful you must make your protein and Fluid goals, otherwise your body is going to take the protein it needs from your muscles. How are you getting 1000 calories a day if you aren't keeping your protein down? Instead of more surgery, you should ask the surgeon for help in keeping your food down. Maybe a prescription for anti-nausea medicine.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
