Hi everyone,

I have been hesitant to tell anyone that I am having sleeve surgery in 2 weeks. My BMI is low (31) so I am not your "traditional" patient and I know the comments that will come up.

Why can't you diet and lose the weight?! You exercise everyday and still are that size?! Why can other people do it, but I can't?! This is a lot of money that can be used by the family for other things. The comments and thoughts go on and on.

These are thoughts that I have heard from other people and actually told myself. Last night, I talked with a friend who had low BMI like myself and did it more for preventative reasons and she helped me clear my head. This is MY life! I have to live in this body, no one else. This is for me, no one else. I wish there was more of a shift in the medical community to look at this surgery as a preventative measure. A way to have a fuller, richer life. A way for those of us who have food issues to take control of our life, as an extra tool in our tool belt.

I am doing this for me. To be a better wife, mother, and me!!

I once had a low BMI too. Then I didn't. Mine was high 50's at time of surgery. You do you!

I am doing the surgery with a low BMI too. 19 days until surgery.

I have told my mother and son. That's it. No one from work or anyone else.

I have gained every year. Just 5 years ago I weighed 50 pounds less. I know the way I was coping was a losing battle. I am tired. I want my body back. I want to smile. I want to get dress and not put something back because it won't go over my thighs. I want to stop buying cheap clothes on sale because they fit. I want to go to the beach and wear a swimsuit. I want to actually look in the mirror instead of rushing past it because I don't like the reflection.

You are not alone. This is about you. It is your turn.

I had gastric sleeve yesterday with a BMI of 30. A little sore right now, but very excited to be "me" again. During surgery they found I have fatty liver and a hiatal hernia that was repaired. With a 30 BMI I was shocked! So glad I found out now so I can try to reverse the damage and become the healthy person I deserve to be. Bring on the nutrition!

I was sleeved on dec 5th with a BMI of 31... I also had a fatty liver and I had hiatus hernia repair which I didn't know I had.. I've gone from around 84-85 kgs to 66.9-67.2kgs.
Have come to a halt in the last couple of weeks.
I had a very fast recovery with no concerns or real issues. No pain relief needed after day two and back to work 2 weeks later.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
