Reasonable caloric intake one-week post-op?

Recommended Posts

I've read between 300 and 600 for the first 2 months.

I've read between 300 and 600 for the first 2 months.

That makes me feel better. I've been between 330 and 570 during days 3-7 and it seemed like a big variation, but maybe that's OK.

My surgeon kind of freaked me out at my 1-week post-op appointment today when she told me to cut back on Protein (I've been getting between 60 and 100 grams) but she didn't exactly give a reason. She said that too much Protein adds up to too many calories. So I asked what a reasonable number of calories would be and she said I don't need to count calories. It was weird.

First week I did no more than 300, and that kept me satisfied. Now I am 5 weeks and average 600.

I'm only a week out and the first few days everything hurt to drink even a few sips, so I didn't feel hungry at all. By now, day 8, I'm eating about 550 calories/day and I'm *starving*

I have been walking more each day and did start working out yesterday, so maybe that is why my body suddenly feels hungry again? The first few days I was sleeping 20 hours/day. Then about 16 hours/day, now closer to 10 hours/day. So I must be burning more calories there, too.

I just don't want to mess this up.

I'm with Kaiser. Just had final consult with surgeon for my surgery on the 9th. He said for first 2 weeks a minimum of one 11 oz protien shake and 2 bottles 16.9 oz Water daily.

It's gonna be low. Don't even think about it. You are just on the Protein Shakes and liquids. You aren't going to be getting much till 8 weeks or so.

Isn't not even thinking about how many calories I'm consuming what got me to morbid obesity in the first place? I'm just worried that I'm going to gain back the 7 pounds I lost last week and then never lose more.

I did leave a message for the registered dietician at my bariatric practice. Maybe she can clear things up for me.

Oh no, what I meant was - you will be lucky to even get 200 calories a day at first. Of course I'm not advising you to ignore your diet advice or to eat unhealthy. But if you follow the post op plan you will get up to about 400 calories a day by week 3 or so. When I asked my doctor about calories per day he's the one who told me not to worry myself about them at this point as it's nearly impossible to eat too much at that stage and to focus on Protein and Water only.

It's once I was on full food and have been for a few weeks that I was able to eat about 600 calories a day. I am now, 4 months post op getting about 850 calories per day. I have been told to focus on eating just protein, getting my Vitamins and Water in and walking as much as I can. *shrugs* I was just providing you with the advice I was given from Dr. Zare in CA.

Yeah, I think it is different for different people. I am only 8 days out and I ate 900 calories today and I still felt hungry all day. I didn't have any junk food. All Protein shakes and cottage cheese and Protein Water and sugar-free Jello. Less than 17 grams of carbs total.

I wish I would get that full feeling that everyone else is getting, but I'm not getting it. That's why I'm trying to figure out how many calories to keep myself at.

I read a bunch of peer-reviewed journal articles earlier and the recommendations are all over the place.

I did do an extra workout tonight to burn off some of the extra, but I think I'm going to try to keep my calories down to 500 tomorrow by going back to Clear Liquids for a day.

anonmom!! You're a beast:-). I am 7 days out and don't have the energy to sweep a floor much less workout. My dr has me on full liquids so the only chewing I get to do is my Vitamin chews (yum). I am up to 1.5 Protein Shakes a day and maybe 20 Olof Water. Can't get more down than that. That's about 300 calories.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
