Question re LB Surgery and Hunger?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I just had a thought last night and got scared.

I was thinking about the band and where it is placed and wondered if the surgery is surgical starvation?

R u hungry at all after surgery or is it like gfasting al the time u never feel satisfied??

Sorry if its a dumb question - just need to know.

Please help.

kind regards M:)

There is a nerve at the top of your stomach and that is what signals the brain that you are full.

The band makes a small pouch out of the top of your stomach. So without the band you could eat food the size of a football before that nerve is triggered telling you that you are full. With the band you can eat food the size of a plum to a baseball and the nerve is triggered telling your brain you are full. And you ARE full.

Not a dumb question at all, actually... a very good question.

Thanks so much, I just had visions of me losing weight after surgery - but rolling on the fall with hunger pains.

I feel much better now

You have made my day - haven't seen any info on this topic.

Many thanks again

kind regards M

I am 18 mo out and very seldom have hunger pangs or crave anything. In fact, I get somewhat aggravated when I know I need to eat, get my calorie count up, but I dont' want to eat.....nothing sounds particularly good to me....not bad or repulsive and I'm never nauceous at all, just have a lack of interest in food. I never would have believed it! Every day I fear that tomorrow is the day my appetite comes back!!

The reason the band works is because it makes us so we are very satisfied with an amazingly small amount of food.

Today I have eaten 1/4 cup of refried Beans and I realized I need to keep Protein up and I'm working on a Protein shake.

Total calories so far today (6:06PM) 176. That's figuring the Protein Shake I'm working on is gone and it isn't, yet.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
