I am so excited!!! I have my consult on Tuesday!! The ball is rolling now finally! I gave up on Dr. Tin as no one here has heard of him. I am very excited to meet Dr. Coburn and his team. Katherine said that he can give me my surgery date right there..... so exciting!!

I cannot wait to become an active part of the boards and get my ticker going... you all seem so supportive and helpful. My name is Jackie, I am 28 (about to be 29) and live in Mississauga!

Does anyone have any advice or tips for the consult? Should I bring anything in particular? I have already emailed my questionaire so any extra info is appreciated!:clap2:

I can tell you are excited!! That's great.

Keep a pad of paper with you at all times... Jot down all your questions as they occur to you between now and your consult.

Don't think that ANY of your questions are silly... THEY ARE NOT!

Ask about where your 'port' will be placed and "why" that location was chosen. A lot of variation occurs apparently. Dr. C seems to put them in the abdomen deep under the flesh, while my surgion *Dr. Yau, TBLC places them just under the skin... Some in the abdomen a few inches down from the breast bone, or mine is below my navel 1 1'2" to the left. I dont' know if this is what they call the 'bikini' area or not... but I am o.k. with its location. Fills have been super easy!! and completely pain free. (don't know what I was thinking!)

Ask how long your pre=surgery diet will be... 1 wk, 2 wks etc. what does it consist of.

Whatever happens be patient, post surg until your first fill will probably be 6 weeks... that seems like an eternity when you are awaiting that first fill... but the time is for your body to HEAL inside... and this time is critical to over all success.

Good luck to you and welcome to bandster land!!

Hi Jacklyn,

Be prepared to meet one of the nicest men around! He is great and you will get your questions answered. The staff is also terrific all the way down the line!!

As Peaches said jot down notes and you will be fine!

My consult was done on the phone as I am in Alberta, but it was still a good experience. He never rushed me nor did he make me feel that my questions were odd. He was very reassuring.

The clinic is very nice too! You are so lucky to live there!!

Tell us all about your consult when you are done!!

Thanks, but its o.k. that all you Canadian folks know me... but I was lurking and posting on a BIG board and I felt funny having my picture up... so I took it down.

Perhaps I'll post it again sometime... I dunno..

Not a good food day today... feeling REALLY Full , only had 400 cals its all I could do to get it down...

Oh well, off to work now... se you later gators!!

Congratulations Jacklyn! I remember how exciting it was to get my consult appointment. If you want to go ahead with the surgery, they will book the date at your consult. You just have to have the $500 deposit and then the remaining balance is due 2 weeks prior to surgery. The clinic staff is absolutely amazing and very professional.

Please feel free to ask any questions....we are all here to help!

I think that you ahve made a wise decision to go with Dr.C over Dr. Tin.

The consult is pretty straight forward, it is basically a time for him to outline the surgery in more detail & to pick a date & time.

I can tell you that Dr.C is a great guy who really understands where his patients are coming from. He is gentle an approachable while instilling a sense of confidence in his patients.

Good luck,

Andrew

Thank you all so much for the information on SWLC, needless to say I am super excited for tomorrow! I need just a little more advice. Catherine there said that with my weight 3 weeks of Optifast will be needed most likely. How is the stuff? Any flavors I should get more of or any that are awful? It will be a long 3 weeks so I want to have the best ones.....

HI there,

I didn't have any issues really with the Optifast. I was on it for 2 weeks and had both the vanilla and the chocolate, I perferred the chocolate. What I did was add sugar free Davincy flavourings to the vanilla and a few times fresh strawberries or raspberries.. mmmmm I used a magic bullet which made it like a milkshake when you add lots of ice to it.

Also I did ask if I could exchange it if I found that I couldn't drink one kind and I was told then (last April) that I could. So you might still be able to do that. Never hurts to ask!!

-=smiles=- you will be fine!! and your going to love Dr. Cobourn, but he is mine!!! LOL I saw him first!

I had to do 3 weeks pf Optifast. I was not too fond of the vanilla. I got half or each, but I think I would get 2/3 chocolate, 1/3 vanilla.

It is not too bad when mixed with plenty of ice. There are lots of suggestions around hear about how to get it to taste better.

Blessings to you Jacklyn,

I have been considering the banding and also live in Mississauga. Do you have insurance coverage for the surgery or are you required to pay out of pocket. I am on disability and am at my wits end. I am looking for a way to get the surgery covered and have recently been told that there is government asst. Have you heard anything like that?

Jacklyn Dr. Mumford is an absolute sweetheart. Not to mention good looking LOL. He was my grandmothers surgeon when she had her colonoscopy. Very thorough and great bed side manner. Actually all 3 doctors in that office are wonderful.

Jacklyn,

I concur with Caramia....Dr. Mumford is an absolute doll. He was great during my consult and made me feel very at ease when he spoke with me before going into surgery. The day after surgery I got two calls, one from Tammy (nurse) and another one in the evening from Dr. Mumford.

When I was brought downstairs to get into the car after surgery, Dr. Mumford saw my husband helping me into the car and came over and introduced himself and told him how well the surgery went.

I have no hesitation in recommending him or the clinic!

Hi Caramia,

I do not think the surgery is covered in any way by OHIP and I have not contacted Sunlife (Insurance provider). I plan to ask about that in my consult. I expect in the end this will cost me $16,000. I had wanted a new car but this I think is the better choice :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
