Confused by what my stomach is telling me

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I'm 1 week post op still on the Full liquid diet about to transition to very soft foods like yogurt and refried Beans.

I'm just kind of confused about what exactly the "full" signal is. If I take a sip that's too big or too many sips one after another, I get a distinct painful almost "stuck" feeling that lasts a couple seconds and then it's gone and I'm okay to keep taking sips as long as they're very small.

Is this "stuck" feeling supposed to be the signal that I'm full? I had thought the surgery was meant to make you feel more full and satisfied sooner but this feeling I'm getting doesn't feel like what I remember "full" to feel like.

Anybody have any insight?

Krystal, in my experience, I didn't start getting that full feeling until I started eating food only. And for me, that felt exactly like thanksgiving day feels like for my whole presurgery life. It was a vivid, "oh my god, don't take another bite" kind of pain!

Isn't it crazy how your stomach tells you stuff? I spent a lifetime ignoring and never feeling signals. It's a whole new world! :)

You don't want to be looking for "full." That uncomfortable stuck feeling you are getting isn't full, it's "you ate too much." Instead, measure out a very small meal and eat slowly. When you feel satisfied (NOT physically full) stop eating. If you accidentally get that uncomfortable signal that you ate too much, figure out how much you ate that caused the problem and make sure you measure out a smaller meal than that next time. For example, if you measure out 4 ounces of yogurt but before you finish it you get the "you ate too much" signal, look at how much you have left. Maybe a quarter of what you started with? so 3 ounces was too much. Next time, measure out 2 ounces instead of 4 and eat that instead.

Good luck!

I'm exactly one month post op today.

Honestly, I never felt "full" until I got to the soft food stage and I hate that "stuck in the throat" feeling!! Lol

I think what you are experiencing is your body telling you that you need to slow down and take smaller drinks.< /p>

You said it happens after you took a sip that was "too big" or "too many sips one after another"...sounds like you already knew why it happened you just need to listen to your body and slow it down.

It gets better :)

The only time I felt it, it was from the hiatal hernia repaired but the stuck in the throat mess hurts like the you know what same way it feels from the repair but I was told that when you have that feeling pace the floors for about 10 minutes it will go away had one time when I ate a little too much and I walked about 30 minutes before it moved on down thought I was going to choke to death someone said make yourself throw up but not allowed to via surgeon when you have a hernia repair along with the sleeve

I was told to only eat 1 ounce for my meals for the first two weeks. Now I can move up to 2-4 ounces. A few times I felt full like before. I can't go by being satisfied since I'm really not hunger to start with.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
