Anyone with Barrett's Esophagus?

Recommended Posts

After my EGD my surgeon said that I have this. He called in a perscription for me and scheduled an appointment to come in and speak with him in a few weeks. I was planning on having the sleeve but read that it could make it worse. Anyone out there get diagnosed with this?

My dad does but he isn't considering wls. He should be... He is diabetic as well. The only real change that he needed to make from his regular diabetic diet was the dr told him no more onions or peppers.

I have it, didn't know until I had my endoscopy either. Surgeon changed me to rny bypass to prevent it from going any further. I had my surgery on 12-7-16.

I was diagnosed with Barett's Esophagus after my endoscopy for qualifying for my upcoming sleeve.

After listening to the gastroenterologist, and the information he gave me was a little overwhelming to process, he suggested that I have a consultation with my surgeon to discuss how to proceed. After speaking with my surgeon we determined that we are going forward with the sleeve. As he explained it, there is a consensus that there is a possibility that a sleeve can make Barret's worse, but there are only a small amount of studies that are looking into the correlation between the two. In the end we decided that the area affected for me was very small, and if complications were to arise, I can always opt to have the sleeve converted to a bypass.

I definitely suggest consulting with your surgeon after he gets the report from the gastroenterologist.

Good luck.

I found out I had Barrett's after my pre-op endoscopy. After consulting with my surgeon I opted to have the RNY bypass. With an increased risk of esophageal cancer, I wanted to leave my stomach intact inside my body. God forbid something happens in the future, my old stomach is still there which is what they use to build you a new esophagus.

I had my RNY on 3/14/16 and have been very successful. No more GERD, 121lbs lost and 4lbs to goal!

It's scary to get a diagnosis but I was so thankful for the preop process to truly get a full medical workup and find out any issues I had.

I found out in the pre-op stage that I have Barrett's (a mild case) and I have went through every bit of the pre-op requirements and now my doctor told me that he will not do the surgery because I have Barrett's!! I am so discouraged!! I live in Mississippi!! Does anyone live near or around, and recommend a surgeon?

Some people have bypass surgery because of acid reflux, I would seek or a second opinion.

I have an an appointment next month with my surgeon to discuss what we are going to do. Hopefully they will do bypass since it sounds like they won't do the sleeve with Barrett's

Thank you!! They called at 4:30 this evening and I posted on some Bariatric sites on Facebook for doctor recommendations!! I am not giving up!! I could understand the doctor not doing the surgery if I had a really bad case but my Barrett's is very mild and showed no dysphasia!! I do not have any Cardiology problems other than high blood pressure, I don't have sleep apnea!! The only issues that I have are Barrett's, high blood pressure, high cholesterol!! That's it!! I am 31 and weigh 309 lbs and I figured that I wouldn't be a difficult case!! I am going to call around and try to find a different doctor and I will tell them up front that I have Barrett's so it's not a waste of time like this was!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
