Am I making a mistake?

Recommended Posts

I managed to get through preop with only one pre planned mishap, and surgery is now just one more day away. But have I made the right choice? My heads still all focused on food. How I'm never going to get to fully enjoy a whole burger again. How every meal will only ever be mouthfuls. It freaks me out! Also, if I managed to lose 8kg in two weeks doing the preop diet, do I really need to have surgery. My problem is it's not just a little weight i have to lose, it's 70kg. Can I keep up a diet for that long, it'd take years? I asked my best friend that and all I got back was, well a lot of people have managed to do it on their own but everyone's different. That one comment of "a lot of people" made me so mad and so confused. Why then am I having surgery if so many can lose weight without having to. For me, I know deep down I could maybe lose a lot of what I need to. But I also know I don't have the motivation or will power to diet for years or maintain it well after. I always put it back on. I just feel like I'm cheating or a loser for having surgery, even though I know it's what I need. Can I really detatch myself from food? It's always been so enjoyable. I'm just scared I'm not making the right choice.

Read The Easy Way Out (link in my sig) It's my response to detractors for the surgery. I had the thought pre-op that I was doing well on my pre-op diet, shouldn't I just keep doing that? But I'd had years to do it that way, and some success but never keeping it off, and there's scientific reasons for that.

It's true that this surgery is one you can't take back. There's no reversing it. So you need to be sure. But I can tell you I had the same thoughts, and I'm 4 months out and am SO GLAD I did it.

I think it's important for you to realize THIS is not the easy way out. It's a tool to help you but it won't cure your obesity on its own. YES, you WILL lose weight but you will still have to have willpower and motivation to lose the weight and maintain your loss. I'm 7 weeks out and I have to rely on my willpower often. This is a lifestyle change and I'm glad I made the decision to go through with it. I wish I had done it sooner.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
