Metabolism after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I know this has been discussed but I never felt like I really understood.

I am 16 weeks out . Losing very slowly- 1-2 pounds a week and am good with that. I still eat very very little. My question is-- will I have to eat this little for forever to keep losing weight. I

Currently eat so little because I have no interest in food - HOWEVER- I hear that will

Come back... So my concern is- at 9 months out when I start eating 1000-1200 calories a day WILL I be able to lose weight? I am worried my body is thinking this current state is normal- i prob eat 6-8 hundred a day now maybe . On a good day. Some days less.

I have the same concerns, I am 5 weeks out and can hardly get anything down. The way I see it is.....what can we do about it? If you can't make yourself eat more now then you can't.

My surgeon wanted me at 1,000-1,200 kcal a day by 6-8 weeks out. She says that there is evidence we get a metabolic "reset" with the surgery, but restricting calories too far for long is likely to mess with it again. I had a couple of stalls as I increased my intake, but it evened out.

Thank you- my surgeon has sucked with after care - I just get told whatever you can eat basically-

What worked for me was increasing my calories slowly through the losing process. After I healed, I was at 800 until about month 6. I then hit a pretty bad stall and then bumped them up to 900-1000. At around 10 months, closer to goal and in preparation for maintenance, I bumped them up to 1100. I felt that helped set my metabolic thermostat, and now I can maintain my weight on 1200-1300 calories. If you keep your calories really low through out the process, you may very well be stuck having to maintain your weight at 800 calories or risk gaining, and who wants to do that!

That sucks. I'm hearing more and more reports here of surgeons that aren't doing a good job of educating their patients. That really concerns me.

Tenseintexas- who was your surgeon? I'm shopping in Texas.

Hi! I had my vgs done in Corpus Christi by Dr. Lloyd Steggeman. He is wonderful, great aftercare. He also has privileges in San Antonio. Good Luck!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
