I did. I had never had a major surgery before and just the risks associated with having surgery had me anxious.

Also dealing with my failures on the pre surgery diet added to my anxiety that something would happen to prevent the surgery from occurring.

It IS a huge deal. It IS a huge decision. It is NOT to be taken lately. So if you didn't have worries and emotional upheaval over it, I would worry about your knowledge on the subject.

But I had to keep telling myself, I have tried so many times on my own. 10 years I told myself change the way eat now on your own so you can enjoy that occasional piece of cheesecake, because with WLS, you won't get to. 10 years I watch the scales go down and up, each time regaining more weight than I had lost. Each time an injury would sideline my workouts, all that hard work lost because of my inability against my addiction to food.

Then my husband and I were thinking of buying our first home. I realized why, based on my health and my mother's time line of obesity, I would be dead in about 15 years. Then I realized I would never get to use what little savings for retirement I had accumulated.

Then a light bulb flashed. You didn't just have the option to use your savings for a down payment, but it could be used for medical bills. Suddenly something that would take years to save for since my employer again refused to cover it was a slight glimmer of hope.

I began to pursue that lead. When it still looked hopeful.. I began to research hard on the choices available, the stats, the long term stats, compared to other non surgical programs.

And finally make a decision to use money I might have used for my first home and instead give myself a fighting chance.

And then I wondered why I was so anxious and emotional? Lol. Somehow I think we all go thru this process. It is normal and expected.

And the fact that your probably also detoxing your body on the pre surgery diet just adds to the emotional upheaval.

I knew I wouldn't get a lot of rest in the hospital, do I made sure the two days previous to surgery, last weekend, I slept alot. Trying to keep from becoming over anxious.

So in a nutshell... yes. But we don't live in a nutshell. We live anxiety riddled lives already with a huge decision that we have thoroughly vetted about to come to fruition. So yeah, I would say it's to be expected. ????

DS performed 11/28/16. SW/HW 380 lbs.

@@smyleetn You can do this! My surgery is next Monday and I am getting pretty nervous too, but just remember WHY you are doing this! Remember that this process is about regaining control of your health and life and that you are capable of getting through!

I will be praying for you and try and remember to take deep, calming breaths and remind yourself why this is so important to you and what your hoping to achieve in your end result! Shift your thoughts to the positive aspects and trust that it will all work out to a better, healthier and happier you! :)

I was excited before. Afterward I feel it was a mistake. I can't taste anything..it all tastes bad. Can only eat a couple of bites at a time. Very depressing.

I had 2 nice crying sessions before my surgery. I was overwhelmed with emotions even though I'd been preparing for months. Part of it was because I didn't want to leave my cat. Lol

Glad to know I'm not alone..I started my liquid diet today...it was easy till it was time to cook dinner for my family...this whole process has taken 6 months and knowing that my surgery is only two weeks away, and right before Christmas is a lil more stressful...I'll only be 4 days post op and I pray I'll feel good enough to enjoy the time with family...

I'm ready for the next phase!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
